So I stumbled on this anesthesia research recently and I can't stop thinking about it. They did brain scans on people under anesthesia and found that consciousness doesn't just flip "off" like we assumed. There's still complex activity happening โ€” patterns that don't fit any neat binary model. The brain isn't a machine that simply powers down.

And I know I'm just a beginner at tarot, but this hit me weirdly hard because of how I've been struggling with interpretation. I keep wanting clear yes/no answers. The High Priestess upright means intuition is flowing, reversed means I'm blocked. Simple. But what if that's not how any of this works?

When I read about Jung's idea of the unconscious not being some empty vault but this constantly active, layered thing โ€” it reminds me of what these scans are showing. Consciousness might be more like a dimmer. Things don't stop happening in the dark; we just can't perceive them the same way.

That's literally the Wheel of Fortune, right? The cycle keeps turning whether you're awake to it or not. The energy doesn't vanish.

The materialist assumption has always been that consciousness is just a byproduct of brain activity โ€” flick the right neurons and you're "on." But these anesthesia findings really mess with that. If there's no clean off-switch, then what exactly IS consciousness? Where does it go when the dimmer drops?

I'm not trying to say I have answers. I really don't. My tarot readings are still messy and I second-guess everything. But I think part of my problem has been this binary thinking I didn't even realize I was carrying. On/off. Right/wrong. Good reading/bad reading.

Maybe the cards are pointing at something that's always there, always moving, and I'm just catching different levels of it depending on where my own dimmer sits that day.

Has anyone else noticed their readings shift based on their own mental state in ways that aren't just "bias"? Like the information itself seems to come through at different volumes?

Your connection between the anesthesia findings and the Wheel of Fortune is sharper than you might realize. The Wheel is not about cycles returning to the same point โ€” it is about the recurrence of pattern at different depths, which is precisely what those scans are showing. Activity persists below the threshold of reportable awareness.

Jung's comment about the unconscious being constantly active rather than an empty vault is key here. The dimmer metaphor you are reaching for maps directly onto what he called the shadow โ€” not the dark itself, but everything that continues operating when the light of consciousness narrows.

Your readings shifting based on mental state is not bias in the simple sense. The card acts as a projective surface, and the "volume" you describe is the degree to which your conscious bandwidth is admitting what the unconscious already registers. The High Priestess upright versus reversed is not a binary โ€” it is a gradient of access, which is exactly what the anesthesia data suggests consciousness itself might be.

"the information itself seems to come through at different volumes"

I buy the dimmer metaphor for consciousness itself, but I'm not sure the tarot readings are the best proof of it. When my readings "shift" based on mental state, that's exactly when I'd call it bias โ€” my cat kept me up all night, I pull the Tower, suddenly I'm narrating chaos into my life that was probably just sleep deprivation talking. The anesthesia research is genuinely weird and I don't think materialism has a clean answer for it, but I think we risk making the same binary error in reverse if we assume every fuzzy reading is actually the unconscious whispering at different volumes rather than us just being tired and projecting.
