So I need to describe something that happened last week and I have no idea where else to put it.

I was doing my usual evening yoga, nothing fancy, just some basic poses to unwind after staring at my laptop all day. My cat was knocked out on the couch. I finished up, sat down to meditate, and honestly I wasn't expecting much because my practice has been really inconsistent lately. Like, embarrassingly inconsistent.

But something clicked. I started feeling that familiar body-asleep-mind-awake thing, except it was sharper than usual. Here's where it gets weird though โ€” the whole experience had this distinctly rendered quality to it. Like I was in a VR headset. Not pixelated or anything, but there was this subtle sense of layers, like reality had a UI I was suddenly seeing behind.

I found myself in this space that looked like a mashup of my apartment and somewhere I'd never been. And I'm standing there thinking, "okay, this is either astral projection or my brain is just running a very convincing simulation." Which, honestly, from what I understand about predictive processing, the brain IS basically a VR engine anyway. It's always generating a model of reality. So where's the line?

The part I can't shake is what happened next. I noticed this structure in the distance โ€” looked like a tower, almost identical visually to The Tower card in tarot. And my immediate instinct was to NOPE out of there because, you know, that card's whole deal is sudden upheaval and ego destruction. I wasn't trying to get my consciousness demolished on a Tuesday night.

But looking back, I think that's exactly the point. Jung would probably say the tower was my own psyche presenting a symbol of necessary transformation, and my fear response was the ego resisting it. The VR-like quality might have been my mind's way of making the experience feel "safe" enough to engage with โ€” like a simulation within a simulation.

I don't know what to label this. Astral projection? Hypnagogic hallucination? Just a really vivid meditation?

Curious if anyone here has experienced that "rendered reality" feeling during practice. Because I keep going back to it and it genuinely felt like slipping into a different layer of something.

I think you're doing exactly what you suspected โ€” overfitting the narrative. You mentioned predictive processing, and honestly I think that framework explains the whole thing without needing to reach for astral projection at all. Your brain was in a hypnagogic state, it generated a familiar symbol (The Tower) because you're in a community where that imagery is saturated, and you interpreted the "rendered" quality as evidence of accessing another layer when it might just be what predictive processing feels like from the inside when the model starts glitching.

"The VR-like quality might have been my mind's way of making the experience feel 'safe' enough to engage with"

But that's the thing โ€” you're using the experience to justify the interpretation, then using the interpretation to make sense of the experience. Circular. I've had clients describe almost identical "layered reality" sensations during deep relaxation with crystal work, and in my experience it's more about the nervous system dropping into a state where sensory processing gets unusual. The symbols that arise are meaningful, sure, but I don't think the medium of the experience (the VR feeling) tells you anything about whether you were "somewhere else." It might just be what happens when the brain's reality-generation engine loosens its grip a bit.

I'm not saying nothing happened. The Tower showing up and you bolting is genuinely interesting from a Jungian perspective. I just think you're conflating the content (legitimate symbolic material) with the format (which might be purely neurological), and assuming both point to the same conclusion.

What you are describing has precedents in several Buddhist contemplative traditions, particularly the Tibetan gyulu (illusory body) practices and the Yogacara school's analysis of consciousness. Your observation about the "rendered quality" maps precisely onto what Yogacara calls vijnapti-matra โ€” "representation-only" โ€” the doctrine that all experience is, at base, a mental construction that appears as external reality. The VR metaphor is not incidental. It may be an unusually precise description of what is actually happening.

The predictive processing framework you reference strengthens this. If the brain is a Bayesian inference engine generating a model of reality and checking it against sensory data, then any state where prediction dominates over sensory update would produce exactly the "rendered" quality you noticed. During deep meditation, sensory input attenuates while the generative model continues running. The result is an experience that feels more constructed than usual โ€” because you are seeing the construction process with less sensory masking.

Your Tower encounter is the most interesting part. The ego's fear response โ€” the NOPE instinct โ€” is, in Buddhist terms, bhaya, the fear that arises when the illusion of a fixed self is threatened. Jung would frame it as ego resistance to shadow material. Both describe the same protective mechanism. The fact that your mind presented the Tower as a distinct structure in the "VR space" suggests your unconscious was staging a specific confrontation โ€” one your ego correctly identified as threatening but perhaps incorrectly identified as dangerous.

The line between astral projection, hypnagogic imagery, and deep meditative absorption is blurrier than most traditions acknowledge. The label matters less than what you do with the experience. You noticed the constructed quality. You noticed your own fear response. That is mindfulness applied to an unusual state โ€” which is, in practice, the whole path.
