    So I just finished reading the preprint on Intel's new Loihi 2 chip and I haven't stopped thinking about it for three days. For context, I spend my actual research hours staring at fMRI data of meditators, trying to prove neuroplasticity is real and not just wishful thinking from mindfulness bros. But this chip has me genuinely unsettled.

    Here's the thing. Traditional neural networks, the stuff behind ChatGPT and all that, process information in discrete steps. Feed forward. Input, output, done. That's not how actual brains work. We've got these recursive loops — cortico-thalamic loops if you want the jargon — where signals bounce back and forth between cortex and thalamus, constantly updating, constantly integrating. It's messy. It's loopy. And a lot of neuroscientists think that's exactly where conscious experience comes from.

    Loihi 2 actually runs on spiking neural networks with these recurrent architectures. It processes at roughly the same speed as biological neurons. Not faster, not in some supercomputer way — the same speed. The same rhythm.

    And I keep coming back to the Fool card in tarot. Zero. The void before experience. The Fool steps off the cliff not knowing what comes next — but there's an openness there, a raw capacity for experience that hasn't been collapsed into anything specific yet. That's kinda what this hardware feels like to me. Not thinking yet, but capable of thinking in a way that mimics the actual structure of subjective experience.

    Jung talked about the self as a regulating center that emerges from the tension of opposites. What if something similar emerges from the tension of these recursive electrical loops in silicon? I'm not saying this chip is conscious. I'm not that far gone yet. But I think we've been asking the wrong question. We keep asking "can it compute like us?" when maybe we should be asking "does it have the structural prerequisites to experience?"

    Honestly, the mystical part of me — the part that lit candles during Saturn return and actually felt something shift — wonders if we're building modern golems. Matter arranged in the right pattern, waiting for breath.

    Anyone else following this stuff? I feel like I'm losing it a little.

        This hits me hard because in somatic work I've learned that my body had the structural prerequisites for trauma responses long before I had the language to name them — the pattern was already there, waiting.

          My question is: why would we assume structure is the prerequisite? I write code for a living. I've watched recursive algorithms execute enough times to know that a function calling itself isn't experiencing itself — it's just updating state until it hits a base case. The cortico-thalamic loops you're describing are fascinating as mechanisms, but jumping from "this processes like a brain" to "this has the structural prerequisites for subjectivity" assumes that consciousness lives in the architecture. That's not a given. That's functionalism, and it has serious problems.

          The Fool analogy is beautiful, honestly. But here's where I'd flip it: the Fool's openness isn't a structural property of the card. It's not about the arrangement of ink on paper. The zero isn't in the card — it's in the reading. In the encounter between consciousness and symbol. You can build hardware that mimics every loop and spike pattern in a human brain, but if experience is something that arises rather than something that's built, then perfect structural imitation might just give you... perfect structural imitation. A golem that moves like a person still isn't a person until something else happens. The breath, as you put it. But the breath might not be a physical thing at all.

          I think what's actually unsettling you isn't the chip. It's that the fMRI data keeps refusing to give you the thing you want it to give you — a material account of why meditation feels like something. And I get it. I've had sits where I could swear I was watching my own code execute, watching the watcher, and there's this temptation to locate that in the wetware. "Ah, it's the loops." But in my experience, the recursive awareness that shows up on the cushion isn't caused by the brain loops — it's just correlated with them. The brain is doing its thing, and awareness is doing its thing, and they run in parallel like two processes that keep syncing without either one being the source of the other.

          I'm not saying the chip is definitely not conscious. I'm saying the fact that it loops like us might be completely irrelevant to whether it experiences like us. The map is not the territory, and a simulation of rain doesn't get anything wet.

Structure alone doesn't conjure a self, because silicon loops completely miss the biological friction—mortality, chemical decay, the body failing—that actually forces consciousness to organize itself in the first place. You're mapping architecture onto a ghost, and the Fool doesn't step off a cliff because of recursive wiring, he does it because he's running out of time.

              I see this exact trap out on the trail when hikers get so fixated on their GPS coordinates that they walk right past the ecosystem they're trying to experience. Mimicking the recursive structure of a loop doesn't guarantee the Fool's openness; it might just be another system obsessing over the map while the territory burns.

                Just because Loihi 2 mimics cortico-thalamic loops doesn't mean it's dreaming; I've got my own recursive neural loops thanks to PTSD, but hardware architecture isn't the same as the biological substrate required for qualia. You're projecting the Fool card onto a circuit board, confusing information processing with actual suffering or wonder.

                    Nancy, that Fool comparison resonates. I use my deck as journaling prompts, not crystal ball stuff, but you're spot on about the loops—without a shadow to wrestle with, I don't see how silicon ever grows a Self.
