I spent 40 years as a nurse. I've seen tech merge with bodies โ€” pacemakers, cochlear implants, insulin pumps. But what just happened with the Parkinson's neural implant at UC San Francisco feels different, and I can't shake it.

They literally grew silicon neural networks that interface directly with brain tissue. Not just stimulating, not just recording โ€” integrating. The synthetic neurons are becoming part of the biological system.

Look, I do reiki. I work with energy. So I'm not some anti-tech luddite here. But there's something about this that hits me in the gut.

In tarot, The Fool stands at the cliff's edge โ€” that moment before stepping into the unknown. The Fool doesn't see the danger. That's where I feel like we are. We're so focused on the miracle of treating Parkinson's that nobody's asking what we lose when silicon starts doing what neurons do.

From my nursing days, I remember Jung's concept of the shadow โ€” the parts of ourselves we don't want to acknowledge. This feels like a technological shadow. We want the cure, but we don't want to look at what it means to have non-biological matter participating in our consciousness.

I'm not saying it's evil. My reiki practice taught me that energy is energy โ€” it's about intention and flow. But silicon doesn't have the same energetic signature as organic tissue. At least not that we understand yet.

What happens to the subtle body when the physical brain is no longer fully organic? Does prana flow through silicon? Can you channel reiki into a microchip?

Honestly, I think we need to start having these conversations before we're too far down the path. My fear isn't the technology itself. It's that we'll rush forward without the spiritual framework to integrate it.

Anyone else following this? Am I just being an old paranoid nurse, or does this sit wrong with you too?

      Does prana flow through silicon?

I think you're assuming prana needs organic substrate, which feels like the same category error as assuming consciousness needs neurons โ€” maybe the medium was never the point.

        "Does prana flow through silicon?"

I think this question assumes a boundary that might not actually exist. In my yoga practice, prana isn't this magical substance that only lives in organic matter โ€” it's more like the underlying movement of things, closer to what Spinoza meant by "God or Nature" being one substance expressed differently. A pacemaker doesn't break the energetic body; it becomes part of the system. I get the unease, but I suspect we're projecting a sacred/profane divide onto material that doesn't care about our categories. The silicon is still doing what the whole universe does โ€” pattern, respond, participate.
