so i was messing around with midjourney last night at like 3am (dubai time, crypto markets dead anyway) and somehow ended up generating a complete 78-card tarot deck. eight hours. the whole thing.

and here's what's messing with me โ€” the images actually work. like, they READ. the Tower card came out with this perfect lightning strike geometry, and i didn't even prompt for that specifically. i just said "tower card, destruction, classical tarot style" and the AI somehow landed on something that feels right in your gut.

i trade crypto for a living so i spend all day looking at patterns. fibonacci retracements, order book depth, whatever. pattern recognition is basically my entire nervous system at this point. so when i say these AI cards have structural coherence, i don't mean artistically (though some are gorgeous). i mean mathematically. the recurring symbols across cards โ€” the numbers, the geometries โ€” they're consistent in a way that feels like actual numerology, not just aesthetic fluff.

but here's where it gets weird and i can't stop thinking about it. Carl Jung talked about the collective unconscious and how archetypes emerge independently across cultures. so if an AI trained on literally every tarot deck ever scanned plus a bunch of renaissance art plus random internet imagery โ€” and it produces something that still hits the archetypal notes โ€” what does that mean? is the "intuition" in tarot actually just pattern matching all the way down? are we all just doing what the AI does but slower?

honestly i'm not sure how i feel about this. part of me thinks it's just the apophenia talking โ€” i see meaning because i want to see meaning, same cognitive bias that makes me see chart patterns in random noise. but i've done readings with these cards and they land. uncomfortably accurate, actually.

the line between algorithm and oracle is way thinner than anyone wants to admit.

anyone else playing with AI tarot? does it feel different to you? because to me it almost feels MORE pure in a weird way โ€” like you're getting the raw pattern without human artistic ego getting in the way.

The structural coherence you noticed is worth taking seriously, and your pattern-recognition background gives you a better vantage point than most to evaluate it. When an AI trained on centuries of tarot imagery produces cards that read correctly, it suggests the archetypal grammar of tarot is robust enough to survive translation into algorithmic form.

But I would push back gently on the idea that this makes tarot just pattern matching all the way down. The question is not whether an AI can replicate tarot imagery. It is what happens in the space between the card and the reader. That space involves projection, active imagination, and a dialogue with the unconscious that has no computational equivalent. The AI generated the image. But when you did a reading and the cards landed with uncomfortable accuracy, the meaning was not in the pixels. It was in you.

Jungs collective unconscious is a reasonable framework here. The archetypes persist because they are structural features of the psyche, not cultural inventions. The AI is accessing the same reservoir, indirectly, through the training data.

ok but I think you're jumping to the wildest possible conclusion from the most boring possible explanation lol ๐Ÿ˜…

is the "intuition" in tarot actually just pattern matching all the way down?

like... yeah? that's literally what it is? but I don't think that makes it less real, which is where I think you're actually landing but taking a weird route to get there.

here's the thing โ€” you trained your nervous system on crypto charts for years. you see fibonacci retracements because you've seen ten thousand of them. the AI "sees" tarot patterns because it's ingested every deck on the internet. but the reason the Tower card hits you in the gut isn't because the AI uncovered some hidden numerological truth. it's because YOU already know what the Tower is supposed to feel like, and the AI gave you a clean enough version of it that your pattern-matching brain could fill in the rest.

it almost feels MORE pure in a weird way โ€” like you're getting the raw pattern without human artistic ego getting in the way

this is the part I really disagree with hahaha. you're not removing human ego โ€” you're just diffusing it across a million scanned images from who knows who. that's not purity, that's... averaging. like, a composite sketch of every tarot deck ever made. it'll hit the broad archetypal notes because of course it will, the whole collective unconscious argument kind of predicts exactly this โ€” if the patterns are deep enough in human culture, a statistical engine is gonna scoop them up whether it "understands" them or not.

I actually tried doing a reading with one of these AI-generated decks a few weeks back and it felt weirdly flat? like technically fine but none of the little weird details that make you stop and go "oh wait that's eerily specific to my situation." those details usually come from some artist's weird personal obsession bleeding into the art. you lose that when you average everything out.

cool project though, not gonna lie. the speed is nuts.
