So I read that essay going around โ€” the one from the senior developer talking about how every project, every promotion, every tech stack migration just leads to the same hollow feeling. Couldn't stop thinking about it all day.

Because I've been there. Spent eight years in software before I finally burned out hard enough that I had to stop and actually look at what was happening internally.

What struck me is how perfectly it maps to tanha โ€” that Buddhist concept of craving or "thirst" that keeps the whole wheel spinning. You finish the feature, you ship the product, you get the raise. And for maybe two days there's relief. Then the next thing becomes the thing you NEED. Joseph Campbell actually talked about this same pattern through the hero's journey lens โ€” you return from the ordeal with the boon, but the boon never quite fixes the original wound. The cycle just continues.

I think there's something specific about tech that makes this worse. Everything is optimizable. There's always a better architecture, a cleaner abstraction, a more efficient workflow. The system itself is built on perpetual dissatisfaction disguised as "growth mindset." And I mean, look at the Devil card in tarot โ€” two figures chained, but the chains are loose enough to remove. They just don't. They've gotten comfortable in their bondage. That's tech culture in a nutshell. We're chained to the next sprint, the next deployment, and we could walk away but we don't even see the chains anymore.

From a psychology angle, I think what's happening is that we're projecting an inner state of lack onto external accomplishments. Jung would probably call it a shadow dynamic โ€” the emptiness we refuse to acknowledge gets played out through endless doing. The code becomes a compulsive ritual without any actual sacred dimension to it.

The weird thing is, my burnout ended up being the doorway. When I finally couldn't stare at another IDE without feeling physically ill, that's when I started actually sitting with the discomfort instead of coding my way out of it. That's when inner alchemy started making sense to me โ€” not as metaphor, but as actual practice.

Anyone else come to this stuff through tech exhaustion? Because I'm starting to think burnout isn't the problem. It's the signal.

But what if burnout isn't a signal at all โ€” just exhaustion dressed up as meaning? I'm wary of romanticizing something that might just be your body saying "stop."

I agree burnout is the signal, but framing it as tanha keeps you stuck analyzing the problem instead of redirecting that energy toward what you actually want to call in.
