So I just watched this documentary about the guy who ran 500 miles while microdosing, and honestly I still don't know what to make of it. It's been sitting with me all night.

I get the appeal. I really do. When I first got into inner work last year after my divorce, I wasn't running 500 miles but I was throwing myself into ice baths and breathwork with the same kind of energy. There's something about pushing your body to its absolute limit that cracks you open. Joseph Campbell would probably call it the belly of the whale phase โ€” you have to get destroyed before you can come back with the boon.

But here's my thing. From a Jungian perspective, I worry about the difference between confronting the shadow and just... outrunning it. Like, is this actually integration work or is it The Fool jumping off a cliff with a backpack full of mushrooms? There's a fine line between a vision quest and a dissociative episode that happens to have really good cinematography.

I keep thinking about the Tower card. The whole point of that card is that the destruction comes TO you, uninvited. It's not something you engineer through sheer force of will and substances. When you build the collapse yourself, are you really transforming anything? Or are you just performing your own breakdown for an audience?

I'm not trying to be a buzzkill. I think there's something real there about endurance and altered states opening doors that normal consciousness can't crack. But I also work in data analysis all day, and I've seen enough people chase metrics to recognize when someone might be optimizing for a narrative instead of actual healing.

Has anyone here done something like this โ€” extended fasting, long solo retreats, endurance stuff as a spiritual practice? Did it actually shift something or did you just feel broken afterwards?

I'd recommend The Body Keeps the Score if you're interested in why we sometimes need to go to extremes to feel anything real. Not occult at all but it clicked a lot of pieces together for me.

I'd push back on this a bit โ€” there's a whole tradition of voluntary austerities in both Eastern and Western esoteric practice that are absolutely engineered. The difference isn't invited vs. uninvited, it's whether you're doing it with a teacher and a structure, or alone with a camera crew. My yoga teacher talks about tapas as heat โ€” you're deliberately creating friction. But the framework around it is what keeps it from just becoming self-harm dressed up as spiritual.

This nails it โ€” in my experience, self-engineered ego death often just recompiles the same patterns with a dramatic commit message.
