Last month I ended up running a tiny tea leaf reading station at a Halloween get-together. I was supposed to be the one making sure people didn’t trip over the pumpkin lights, not the one standing by the kettle talking about what the wet leaves were “showing” them. But once the room got quiet, it hit me: we do this all the time. We turn practice into performance. In my yoga world, I see it constantly—poses become branding, breath becomes content, and the whole thing gets packaged until the root is just a logo.

The tea leaves did something similar. People didn’t care whether the shapes were “accurate.” They cared what the shapes made them admit. That’s where I get a little philosophical, because I think divination often works less like a crystal ball and more like a mirror. You bring your anxieties, your hopes, your unfinished business into the cup, and the pattern gives you permission to look at it. That’s a lot like why Rorschach inkblots can be so revealing. The image is ambiguous enough that you have to supply the meaning.

What surprised me most was the Halloween layer. The whole night was already about masks, thresholds, liminal figures. So when someone saw a shadowy shape near the rim of the cup and said, “That looks like the part of me I don’t want to see,” I thought, there it is. That’s the same energy I keep noticing in tarot. The Moon card isn’t just “confusion.” It’s the threshold where the conscious mind gets tired and the deeper stuff starts talking. Even Jung had a point about archetypes—not because they’re spooky, but because they’re reusable patterns of human experience.

I don’t think tea leaf reading is going to replace my mat practice. But I do think it reminded me of something I’ve been trying to say about yoga for years: the point isn’t the shape. The point is what the shape opens. If a Halloween party can make people honest enough to stare into a cup and say, “Oh, there’s that thing again,” then maybe the ritual was doing more work than I expected.
