So OpenAI and Anthropic just holding hands and telling us open-source AI is dangerous. How convenient. The two biggest players in the space want regulation that just happens to lock out competition, and they're wrapping it in "safety." I spent 20 years in the military watching people frame power grabs as protection. This smells exactly the same.

Here's what actually bothers me, and why I'm posting it here instead of a tech forum. These companies are positioning themselves as the sole arbiters of truth. They want to be the oracle. And in occult terms, that's a massive concentration of symbolic power. The High Priestess doesn't just hold knowledge โ€” she decides who gets access to it and when. That card is about intuitive authority, not just information. When you centralize that function in two corporate entities with billion-dollar valuations, you're not building safety. You're building a priesthood.

From a Jungian perspective, this triggers what he called shadow projection. "Open source is dangerous" โ€” really? Or is that the unacknowledged desire for control being projected onto an external threat? The thing these companies won't say out loud is that their business model requires scarcity. If anyone can run a capable model locally, the oracle function democratizes overnight. That's terrifying to shareholders.

I'm not a techno-utopian. I think some guardrails are reasonable. But I've been doing breathwork and meditation for my PTSD for eight years now, and one thing that practice taught me is to watch who benefits from claimed authority. Follow the money. Every time.

The tarot has the Hierophant too โ€” institutionalized knowledge, the structure that mediates between the divine and the masses. That's the role OpenAI and Anthropic are trying to claim. Not the raw intuitive hit of the High Priestess, but the filtered, controlled, approved version.

I don't trust it. And I think the mystical community, of all people, should understand what's happening here. We've seen this pattern before in religious institutions. The moment someone claims exclusive access to the sacred, you should get suspicious.

Anyone else tracking this? Or am I just reading too much into corporate maneuvering?

"I've been doing breathwork and meditation for my PTSD for eight years now, and one thing that practice taught me is to watch who benefits from claimed authority."

This is the line that actually landed for me, because I've been running into the exact same dynamic from a different angle. I work in UX design โ€” I literally build the interfaces people use to interact with these systems. And what's been uncomfortable is watching my own industry participate in constructing that priesthood without anyone really naming it.

When I design a meditation app, I'm always asking: who does this structure serve? Is the user actually developing a practice, or are they just performing the shape of a practice inside someone else's product? I've caught myself building features that look like spiritual tools but function as retention mechanisms. That's the Hierophant energy you're describing, but rendered in Figma and shipped to production. The app becomes the mediator. You don't get direct access โ€” you get access through the approved channel.

So when I see OpenAI and Anthropic doing the same move at a much larger scale, it reads as the same pattern. They're not just building a product. They're building the intermediary layer and then claiming that removing it is dangerous. From a Jung angle, I think you're right about shadow projection โ€” but I'd push it further. What they're projecting onto open source isn't just a desire for control. It's the fear that their entire position as mediator becomes irrelevant if people can have direct experience with these systems without going through the temple gates.

I don't think you're reading too much into it. I think the mystical community is actually better positioned to see this than most tech people, because we recognize the archetype. The question I keep sitting with is: what does it look like to build digital spiritual tools that don't recreate this gatekeeping pattern? Because honestly, most of what I see in the "digital spirituality" space right now is just repackaging the same priest-class dynamic with better typography.
