brain computer interface meditation enhancement
-
I don’t post often, but I’ve been reading through the threads on brain-computer interfaces and meditation, and one thing keeps coming back to me: the promise of enhancement can get lost if we don’t ask what is being enhanced.
A BCI that measures meditative states, like EEG patterns associated with calm or focused attention, could be useful for feedback. It might help someone notice when their mind is drifting, or when a practice is producing a measurable shift. But it also risks turning meditation into a performance metric. If the goal is to “optimize” a state that is usually cultivated through patience, the interface can become a distraction.
I’d be more interested in tools that support practice without making the user feel like they are being measured by a machine. The best enhancement, to me, would be subtle: a quiet cue, a gentle boundary, or a way to understand one’s own patterns over time. Not a score. Not a leaderboard. Just a better relationship with attention.
