I've been sitting with AI-generated meditation music for a few weeks now, mostly late at night after work. I'm a plumber, so my hands spend the day inside pipes, pressure, leaks, the small mechanical prayers of a building. Then I come home to Lisbon, the river light, and I try to quiet the noise inside. I was raised evangelical, so I know what it is to be told the spirit should sound a certain way: pure, ordered, safe. Now I'm in the middle of deconstruction, and my inner life feels more like a cathedral with the roof off.

When I first played the AI tracks, I was impressed. The tones were smooth, the frequencies even, the whole thing polished. But after a few minutes I felt something missing. Not bad. Just... clean. Too clean. Like a marble floor in a church that has never been walked on.

I pulled The Hermit from my tarot deck that week. The card felt relevant: a lantern, a mountain path, a figure learning to carry light alone. I started thinking the music wasn't failing me so much as my ear was asking for a human flaw. A breath catching. A note bending. A small imperfection that says, yes, a person was here, struggling, offering something.

I keep coming back to the mere exposure effect. The more I listen to a sound, the more familiar and calming it can become. That’s useful. It can help the nervous system settle. But I don’t want comfort to be the whole point. I want the music to open a door, not just paint the walls.

Carl Jung talked about the inner life as something that needs integration, not just decoration. For me, AI meditation music can be a beautiful container, a soft bowl for the breath. But when I’m in the darker alchemical work, the nigredo, the part where the old self is burning down, I often need a sound that can hold tension. Something that doesn’t smooth everything away.

So my perspective is this: AI music quality can be high, even hypnotic, but it may not always carry the kind of spiritual residue that a human recording has. A voice, a bowed string, a room tone, a small mistake. That residue can make the music feel like a companion.

I’m still learning language for all of this. The tarot helps. The silence helps. The river helps. I just wonder if the next good meditation track will be the one that leaves a little scratch in the air.
