Why I Can’t Stop Seeing 222: A Customs Officer’s Take on Number Synchronicity
-
I’ve been seeing 222 everywhere lately. 2:22 on the office clock. 222 in a customs declaration number. A truck plate with 222 on the back. At first I thought, okay, my brain is just tired. Then I kept catching it again, and now I’m stuck between two readings: either the universe is leaving little notes, or I’ve trained myself to notice a specific string of digits.
I’m a customs officer in Tucson, so numbers are basically my daily wallpaper. Entry numbers, box counts, timestamps, license plates. During a rough breakup, I started doing tarot as a way to get out of my own head. I still read cards daily, but not as prophecy. For me, a card is a journaling prompt. If I pull the Two of Cups, I ask what relationship or emotional need is asking for attention. If I pull the Hermit, I ask what I’ve been avoiding. That’s where the 222 thing started getting weird for me, because the tarot symbolism around twos keeps pointing to duality, balance, and choices between two paths.
From a psychology angle, I keep coming back to apophenia, which is the tendency to see meaningful patterns in random data. That feels honest. I also can’t ignore confirmation bias: if I’m looking for 222, I’ll remember the times it shows up and forget the thousands of other number strings I never notice. That said, I don’t think it’s all just noise. Carl Jung talked about synchronicity as meaningful coincidences that aren’t causally linked. I don’t know if that’s a real mechanism or a useful metaphor, but it explains why I feel a little “pulled” by repeated numbers.
What I’ve found is that the pattern works best when I treat it as a signal to slow down. When 222 appears, I ask: What am I repeating? Where do I feel stuck between two options? What part of my life is asking for more balance? The cards help me name the feeling, and the numbers just seem to flag the moment.
So I’m not claiming 222 is a universal code. I’m just saying that when you’re in a season of transition, your mind starts scanning for meaning, and the tarot gives you a language for that scan. For me, the synchronicity isn’t magic in the sense of “the cards control my future.” It’s more like a mirror with a pattern-recognition engine. And honestly, that’s enough for now.

Your >mirror with a pattern-recognition engine< line is exactly what I felt when 222 kept showing up during my 2018 layoff: my brain was auditing the same suspicious transactions until I named what I was avoiding. I don’t call it proof, but I do treat it as a useful flag.
