I’ve been re-reading my own chart after the funeral, because when you lose someone, the sky feels less like a ceiling and more like a courtroom. I’m a Leo, and for years I treated that as a compliment. Then I started calculating houses, degrees, and aspects with the same stubbornness I used to use for load calculations, and the “dark side” stopped being a list of sins. It became a mechanism.

Leo’s reputation is pride, demand for attention, drama, and the occasional “I was right” delivered at full volume. I get all of it. In my experience, it’s not that the Leo wants to be watched all the time; it’s that being unseen feels like a small death. After my wife died, I kept expecting the world to notice I’d changed. When it didn’t, I got irritable. I made jokes too loud and kept tuning my guitar like the volume knob was a personality trait. I tried to turn grief into a performance, because if I was the center of attention, I didn’t have to sit in the quiet part.

That’s where I think Jung’s shadow idea fits, at least for me. The “dark” Leo trait is often the part of the self that refuses to be diminished. In the Rider-Waite tarot tradition, The Sun is life force, visibility, and confidence. The shadow of that is the fear of insignificance. A Leo can become generous, loyal, and magnetic, but the same energy can curdle into impatience, vanity, or the need to be the loudest person in the room. The Sun card doesn’t look mean. It looks radiant. That’s exactly why the blind spot is easy to miss.

What I’m trying to figure out is whether the dark side is a character flaw or a protection strategy gone stale. Does a Leo’s need for recognition come from a genuine wound, from a fixed-sign insistence on being “right,” or from something more systemic, like the way we all perform normalcy after loss? I ask because I don’t want to flatten the sign into a caricature.

Has anyone else noticed their Leo traits getting sharper after a loss? I’m not trying to blame the chart. I’m just trying to read it like an engineer reads a failure report: not to judge the part, but to understand what broke and why it kept running.

I’d push back on framing it as Leo shadow: Bowlby’s attachment theory suggests grief can reactivate early attachment injuries, so the “need to be seen” may be a relational regulation strategy, not a fixed-sign flaw. The chart is a useful metaphor, but it can flatten the actual developmental history.
