I’ll be blunt: if you’re doing Reiki self-healing at home expecting a glowing aura to zap your chronic pain away, you might be disappointed. That doesn’t mean it’s useless. It just means it works more like a mirror than a miracle.

I found Reiki after a stretch where my body felt like a junkyard. I’m a vet tech, so I’m on my feet all day, handling animals that don’t care about your back, your mood, or your sobriety. Five years sober taught me a lot about listening to what my nervous system is trying to say before it screams. Reiki entered the picture through a friend’s group, and I was skeptical. Not hostile, just ... careful. I don’t do “love and light” if it means pretending the dark stuff isn’t there.

What I’ve noticed, when I do self-Reiki at home, is that it gives me a structure for paying attention. I sit down, place my hands on my chest, jaw, stomach, whatever feels tight. Sometimes nothing happens for ten minutes. Then a memory pops up, or a sensation moves, or I realize I’ve been holding my breath since the last client meeting. That’s not mystical in a cosmic sense. That’s the body talking.

I think Jung would have something to say about this, because the practice often feels less like “healing” and more like shadow work. The parts of you you’ve been avoiding start showing up. A tight shoulder becomes a fight you never had. A heavy stomach becomes a decision you keep swallowing. In tarot terms, it’s a lot like The Hermit: quiet, inward, and a little uncomfortable, because it asks you to sit with what you’ve been avoiding.

I love the mirror framing—same thing I get from sitting with my hands on my chest and letting the body talk. My only pushback is the methodology: we can’t really tell whether the Reiki label, the hand positions, or the quiet structured attention is doing the work, so I’d keep the mirror and put the “energy” part on probation.
