The map is not the territory: why I care about nadis more than chakras now
-
I’ll be honest: chakras saved me for a while. In my early twenties, after a mental health crisis that made me feel like my nervous system was a haunted house, I grabbed any map that promised structure. Seven centers, colors, healing mantras. It helped. It also made me weirdly anxious about being “stuck” in the third eye or “blocked” in the heart.
Then a coworker who does yoga said something simple: don’t just stare at the points, watch the movement. That sent me toward the idea of nadis — the subtle channels in yogic anatomy, not just the chakras themselves. I don’t claim nadis are proven in the way a vein or nerve is. I’m a park ranger, not a subtle-body physiologist. But as a practice framework, they’ve been more useful for me.
Think of a creek in the Sonoran Desert. It’s not a row of ponds. It’s a moving system: water, heat, silt, wind, shade, the angle of the rock. If you only label the pools, you miss the current. My body felt that way. Chakras gave me locations.

I’m with you on the conclusion: movement beats coordinates. The second you start treating a chakra like a fault code—“heart blocked,” “third eye stuck”—you’ve turned a map into a diagnosis, and that’s where the anxiety creeps in. I used to think my spiritual life was a dashboard with little warning lights. Now I’m more into nadis because they’re less like “you have a heart chakra issue” and more like “your plumbing is doing a weird loop.” Less diagnostic, more observational. I can watch the current move without immediately becoming a tiny emotional repairman.
