My Kitchen Is a Plant Spirit Medicine Kitchen (And I Don’t Care If It’s “Basic”)
-
I’ll admit, when I first started making plant spirit medicine at home, I was trying to sound more mystical than I actually was. I bought a little ceramic cup, lit a candle, and tried to “call the spirit of rosemary” while my cat sat on the counter like a tiny judgmental god. My neighbor, who is also a nurse, looked at my setup and said, “That’s nice. Did you wash the herb?” I think she understood the assignment better than I did.
For me, plant spirit medicine making isn’t about turning a kitchen counter into a sacred museum. It’s about making care visible. I live in Burlington, and a lot of what I see as a therapist is people carrying around small, quiet hurts they don’t know how to name. A cup of chamomile, a little ritual with lavender, or even just taking five minutes to steep something warm can make a person feel less alone in their own body. My kitchen is full of jars, dried herbs, and sticky notes that say “don’t burn the sage,” and I don’t care if it looks basic. It looks like a place where I remember to be gentle with myself.
