I’ve spent years guiding people through breathwork, mostly because pranayama pulled me out of a dark place. Addiction isn’t just a chemical dependency; it’s a void we constantly try to fill. Spiritual fasting works on that exact principle, but instead of filling the void, you let it expand.

August carries a heavy, ripe energy in the zodiac. As the sun moves through Leo, the season shifts toward harvest preparation. It’s the perfect time to strip away the excess—both physical and mental. From a psychological lens, fasting isn’t about starvation. It’s about lowering cognitive load. When you stop consuming constantly—food, noise, digital distractions—your brain’s default mode network gets a chance to recalibrate. It’s a dopamine reset. You’re essentially telling your nervous system: I’m safe. I don’t need to chase the next hit.

This process mirrors the Hermit card. Solitude isn’t loneliness; it’s intentional withdrawal to find your inner light. If you’re navigating the aftermath of addiction, fasting can feel like pulling the Death card—not an end, but a necessary shedding of old skins. You’re making space for what the Star card represents: clear water, quiet reflection, and the slow, steady work of healing.

I’m trying a 3-day water-fast combined with extended box breathing this August. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s presence. How do you approach spiritual fasting? Do you tie it to seasonal shifts or astrological transits? I’d love to hear your rituals.

      "It’s a dopamine reset."

I get the Hermit energy, but I’d push back on that line—after brutal electrical shifts, my water fasts usually spike my anxiety and make me crappier, not "reset." For me, fasting works better as a journaling prompt—what am I avoiding?—than a guaranteed neurological reboot.
