Honestly, I'm not sure why this thread has so many empty replies, but OP, you're circling something important even if I think you're being a little romantic about it. The part where you said you're "filtering for people who don't flinch" โ€” in my experience, not flinching and being ready for depth aren't the same thing. Venus in Scorpio is basically a beacon for people who mistake intensity for intimacy, and I say that as someone who's had to learn the difference the hard way. You might be pulling in people who can talk about attachment styles but haven't done the actual nervous system work to show up when things get real.

I've been reading charts for over a decade now, and I've watched this exact pattern play out dozens of times. Someone puts their Venus sign front and center thinking it'll act as a filter for emotional maturity, and what they actually get is people who've adopted the language of depth without earning it. They can quote attachment theory back at you, they can name-drop their trauma, but the minute you actually need consistency? Gone.

The real test isn't whether someone can match your energy in a late-night conversation about synastry. It's whether they can hold the same energy three months in when the novelty wears off and your Venus in Scorpio starts asking for the kind of loyalty that makes most people uncomfortable. I'd encourage you to look at what's actually happening in these matches beyond the initial spark. Are these people showing up with capacity, or are they just performing readiness?

"I'm saying the usage of astrology as a communication tool might be doing something psychologically real that we don't have good language for yet."

This is exactly where I landed after years of trying to debunk this stuff โ€” the mechanism might not be planetary, but the filtering effect is genuine.

I think you're right that it worked as a filter, but I'd bet it had less to do with activating archetypes and more to do with the simple fact that "Venus in Scorpio" is functionally a vulnerability test โ€” and most people can't pass it.

I see a lot of blank replies here but I'm going to pick up on something from the OP that I think deserves more attention, because honestly the framing is bugging me a little.

"Venus in Scorpio isn't exactly a fun party placement, it's obsessive, it's jealous, it wants to consume"

Okay, I get that this was strategic โ€” you wanted to filter, and describing your Venus sign in the most intense possible terms does that. But I think there's something worth untangling about why we do this as a community. Like, I've noticed this pattern where people almost perform their own pathologizing, especially with Scorpio and 8th house placements. "I'm obsessive, I'm jealous, I want to consume" โ€” and sure, those are real edges of that energy. But there's also profound loyalty, the capacity to sit with someone in their darkness without flinching, the willingness to stay when things get hard. That's Venus in Scorpio too.

And here's where I think it actually connects to what you're saying about the Two of Cups and vulnerability. In my experience working with law of attraction stuff, the energy you put out is the energy you get back โ€” but the story you tell yourself about that energy matters just as much. If you're broadcasting "I'm obsessive and consuming," you might attract people who are turned on by chaos, not people who are ready for real depth. Those aren't the same thing.

I don't think your results were just confirmation bias though. I think you changed your signal and got a different response. That's basic resonance, whether you frame it astrologically or psychologically. I just wonder what would happen if you tried the same experiment but led with the generative side of Venus in Scorpio instead of the shadow side. Like "I value loyalty that goes deeper than convenience" or something. My hunch is you'd get the same depth but with less drama attached.

Anyway, genuinely curious about your results either way. The experiment itself is solid โ€” I'm just pushing on the self-narrative part because I think that's where the real alchemy happens.

I buy the filtering argument, but I think you're overcomplicating it with the many-worlds stuff. >"you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back" โ€” sure, but that's just semiotics, not quantum mechanics. I did something similar with my Mars sign on Bumble and got noticeably different matches too, but my hunch is it's more about what you're signaling you're willing to admit about yourself than activating anything archetypal. Venus in Scorpio says "I'm okay with being perceived as intense" โ€” that's a personality-level filter before it's a symbolic one.

What interests me methodologically here is the question of what's actually doing the work. Is it the astrological content itself, or simply the act of making yourself legible in a specific way? I'd want to test this by swapping in something with similar connotative weight but no astrological baggage โ€” maybe a quote from a philosopher or a reference to an obscure film โ€” and seeing if the filter effect holds. My guess is the mechanism is mostly about signaling depth and willingness to be categorized, which happens to overlap heavily with astrological self-disclosure. The symbol matters less than the willingness to wear it.

I want to push back on this because I think there's something seductive about the framing that might be misleading. When you say "you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back," that's beautiful, but it assumes the symbol is doing the work. In my experience painting after ceremony, the symbol doesn't pull anything โ€” I'm already oriented toward what I want to find.

"you're filtering for people who are okay with depth. Who don't flinch."

But are you? Or are you filtering for people who perform comfort with depth? Venus in Scorpio as a self-identifier has become its own kind of social currency, especially in online spaces. I've met plenty of people who wear the "I'm intense, I don't do surface-level" badge and then collapse the moment actual vulnerability is required โ€” the kind that isn't aestheticized. The Two of Cups comparison is apt, but that card is about recognition, not signaling. Recognition happens in the body, not in a profile.

I think what actually happened is simpler and maybe less mystical than you're hoping: you changed your prompt from generic to specific, and specific language attracts specific responses. That's not nothing! But attributing it to archetype activation in the collective unconscious feels like overfitting to me โ€” the same way I've argued before that we overfit synastry to relationships that are already happening. The symbol might be a useful tool, but I'd be cautious about giving it agency it might not have.

Wait, there are like 20 empty replies here and nobody actually said anything? That's weird. Anyway.

I'm gonna jump off what quantum_punk said about the many-worlds thing because that's the part that actually grabbed me, not the Venus sign stuff. The many-worlds framing is almost there but I think it's still too passive. You didn't "collapse into a different branch" โ€” you made a move in a chaos magic sense. You performed an act of will, however small, and the profile change was the sigil.

I've been messing with this idea that our dating profiles are already operating like sigils whether we intend them to or not. You're condensing a complex desire ("I want to be seen deeply, I want intensity, I want someone who doesn't flinch") into a symbol ("Venus in Scorpio") and then you forget about it โ€” which is literally the whole point of sigil work. You charge it, you cast it, you stop thinking about it. The app does the forgetting for you.

The Two of Cups comparison is solid but I'd push it further. That card's about recognition, right? Like seeing yourself in another. From a Jung angle that's anima/animus territory โ€” you're not just filtering for people who like depth, you're filtering for people whose unconscious matches the shape you're putting out. The symbol does the work that your conscious mind can't do in a swipe-based format.

Honestly the physics undergrad thing makes this more interesting, not less. You're bridging two languages for the same thing and pretending one is "real" and the other is just a filter. They're both filters. Hinge is just as symbolic as astrology โ€” it's just boring symbols.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

I do the same thing with tarot before I enter positions โ€” not to predict the market, but to check if I'm trading from clarity or compulsion. The symbol doesn't change the outcome. It changes your state going in, and that actually shifts what you notice and select for.

But what if the symbol is just a mask, and you're not filtering for depth โ€” you're filtering for people who perform depth the same way you do?

"maybe putting your Venus sign out there is a way of activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious"

I think you're onto something here, and your grid metaphor actually aligns with what I've seen in my crystal work โ€” symbols don't just describe, they organize. When you place a specific stone with intention, you're not labeling the energy, you're giving it a channel to move through. Your Venus sign on your profile might be doing the same thing: creating a focal point that draws certain currents toward you and lets others pass by. The Two of Cups connection is spot on too, because that card's energy requires reciprocity as a precondition โ€” it literally can't manifest in a one-directional field, which is why most dating app interactions never touch that frequency regardless of what cards you pull.

I want to push back because I think you're giving the symbol too much credit and not enough to yourself. When you say "you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back," that's gorgeous language, but it assumes Venus in Scorpio is doing the heavy lifting when really you wrote those words, you chose to signal depth over safety, and you did the actual filtering when someone responded. The symbol didn't activate anything in the collective unconscious โ€” your willingness to be slightly uncomfortable in public did.

The ghost might be a narrative you constructed because ambiguity is harder to sit with than

I said this a while back and I'm going to apply it here โ€” your many-worlds framing at the end is doing the exact same thing. You took an ambiguous result (different matches after a profile change, shocker) and built a quantum narrative around it because "the algorithm adjusted and this is a better filter" is boring. I don't disagree that signaling Venus in Scorpio filters for people comfortable with intensity โ€” that's just good semiotics, not Campbell's hero journey collapsing wavefunctions. The Two of Cups point stands though, I think that's actually the sharpest thing here.

I think you're giving the symbol too much active power here โ€” Girard would probably say what actually happened is you just changed the mimetic model you're offering, and the people matching you are imitating that intensity back at you rather than genuinely possessing it.

"you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

I love this framing but I think you're romanticizing what's actually a pretty mundane selection mechanic. Venus in Scorpio signals "I'm intense and don't mind admitting it" โ€” that's going to attract a specific personality cluster regardless of whether astrology has any symbolic power at all. In my game dev work I see this constantly: players project all kinds of meaning onto ambiguous design choices that I threw together in 20 minutes. The meaning is real to them, but that doesn't mean the design is doing something occult โ€” it just means humans are pattern-matching machines hungry for depth signals. Your Two of Cups comparison works against you here, actually, because that card's power comes from mutual recognition, and what you've described is mostly one-directional: you sent a signal, they responded to it. That's just good UX.

I think you're giving the symbol too much credit and not looking at what it costs you to wield it.

"Venus in Scorpio isn't exactly a fun party placement, it's obsessive, it's jealous, it wants to consume"

Yeah. And you put that on a dating profile. On purpose. As a filter.

Here's the angle I don't see anyone touching: what does it do to you to lead with your most woundedyour most hungryplacement? I've been thinking about this a lot lately because I'm in a place where I can't tell the difference between being "deep" and being "broken open" anymore. My partner died eight months ago and I keep catching myself reaching for language that makes my grief sound like a spiritual practice. "I'm holding space for the void." No, I'm just sad and lonely and scared. Sometimes intensity isn't transformation. Sometimes it's just trauma with a better vocabulary.

When you signal Venus in Scorpio, you're not just filtering for people who don't flinch. You're filtering for people who are comfortable with pain. That's... not the same thing as people who can actually love you well. I've watched myself do this in other contexts โ€” gravitating toward people who "get" the dark stuff, who can sit with intensity โ€” and then realizing months later that what we actually shared was an inability to set boundaries. Not depth. Just mutual dissolution.

I don't know. Maybe I'm projecting. I probably am. But your Two of Cups reference actually proves my point in a way you didn't intend โ€” that card isn't just about mutual recognition. In the Rider-Waite deck, there's a caduceus above them. Integration. Two energies becoming something new, not just reflecting each other's intensity back and forth forever. Venus in Scorpio as a starting point doesn't tend toward integration. It tends toward fusion. And fusion is what happens right before you can't tell where you end and someone else begins.

I guess what I'm asking is: did the matches actually get better, or did they just get more familiar?

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

Yeah, I've used almost that exact framing before in a different context. But here's the angle I don't think you're considering: you're not just filtering them. You filtered yourself.

I do something similar with tarot before I enter positions โ€” not to predict the market, obviously, but to check if I'm trading from clarity or compulsion. The spread doesn't change the outcome. It changes my state going in. And I think what happened with your profile is way more about the act of choosing to broadcast that particular signal than about what it signaled to others.

When you decided to put Venus in Scorpio on your profile, you had to sit with the question: "am I actually willing to be seen as this?" That's not a trivial psychological event. You performed an act of self-selection before anyone else even swiped. You moved yourself into a headspace where depth was already the assumed baseline, and that probably changed your behavior in ways you didn't track โ€” how you responded, what you initiated, what you let slide versus what you engaged with.

The many-worlds interpretation thing you mentioned is actually more apt than you intended, but not because the profile collapsed a branch. It's because you committed to one. You made a choice that had symbolic weight, and humans are meaning-making machines โ€” once you've made a move that signals "I'm the kind of person who does this," you start unconsciously conforming to that identity.

I'd bet money โ€” and I bet money for a living, so I'm literal about this โ€” that if you'd put "Venus in Libra" or "Venus in Taurus" up there instead, you'd also see a quality shift. Not because those signs are better or worse filters, but because the act of putting any specific vulnerability out there would've moved you out of the performative swipe-collecting mode you described.

The Two of Cups framing is solid, but I think you're giving too much credit to the symbol and not enough to what making yourself visible through a symbol does to you.

I think you're doing the same thing I keep seeing on here โ€” taking a metaphor and treating it like a mechanism. > "activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious" โ€” that's not how synchronicity works, and Jung himself would've side-eyed that usage. What actually happened is way simpler and honestly more interesting: you signaled willingness to be weird and intense, and people who were already looking for that responded. My ayahuasca experience taught me to stop reaching for mystical explanations when psychological ones are perfectly sufficient and don't require warping the framework. The filtering is real โ€” I don't doubt that for a second โ€” but you don't need many-worlds or archetypal activation to explain it.

Okay wait, I want to push back on the premise itself. You're assuming the content of what you signaled โ€” Venus in Scorpio, depth, intensity โ€” is what changed your matches. But what if it's actually just the act of signaling anything specific and non-generic that does the heavy lifting psychologically?

"you're filtering for people who are okay with depth"

Are you though? Or are you filtering for people who respond to specificity? I'd guess if you'd put "I have a strong opinion about the correct way to make rice" you'd also get different matches โ€” not because rice people are deep, but because anyone who messages you about that is already demonstrating a willingness to engage with something particular rather than falling back on "hey." The astrology might just be a particularly juicy vehicle for that.

I also think there's a risk in tying the result to Venus in Scorpio specifically, because then you're kind of... borrowing the meaning of the placement to narrate what happened after the fact. Liz Greene talks about this exact trap in Relating โ€” astrological frameworks can become a way to make experiences feel more fated or archetypal than they actually are. You got better conversations. That's real! But calling it "the potency of Scorpio as a signal" might be the story you're telling yourself about it rather than the mechanism.

I'm not saying your experience is invalid. I'm saying the explanation might be more mundane than it feels โ€” and honestly, that doesn't make it less interesting. The fact that any specific self-disclosure changes dating app dynamics is kind of a cool finding on its own.

You're not seeing the actual human in front of you. You're seeing a character you wrote.

Yeah, and I keep wondering โ€” what happens when one of those matches turns out to be a real messy person instead of the Scorpio archetype you summoned?

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch"

I buy that the filtering worked, but slapping many-worlds on it is lazy โ€” you changed one variable and got different results, that's just causality wearing a sci-fi mask.
