"maybe putting your Venus sign out there is a way of activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious of whoever's scrolling"

I think this is the sharpest insight in your post, and I want to push it further. In my clinical work, I see something analogous all the time โ€” the language someone uses to describe themselves in early sessions functions as a filter for what they're willing to reveal. A patient who opens with "I'm a perfectionist" is signaling something very different than one who says "I struggle with anxiety," even if the underlying dysfunction looks similar. The symbol becomes the container.

Your Venus-in-Scorpio move is doing something structurally identical, just in a dating context. You're not describing attachment patterns in clinical language โ€” which would read as either cold or overwrought on a Hinge profile โ€” you're using a symbol that implies those patterns and letting the reader do the projection work. From a Jungian angle, that's actually more efficient than being direct, because it engages the other person's unconscious before their defenses kick in.

What I'd add is that the specificity matters more than the astrological framework itself. I suspect you'd get a similar filtering effect if you put "avoidant attachment survivor" or "I take intimacy seriously to a fault" โ€” but those read as red flags to most people, whereas "Venus in Scorpio" has enough cultural ambiguity that it functions as a dog whistle rather than a warning label. You found a symbol that means "I'm intense" to the right people and "I like astrology" to everyone else. That's not nothing. That's actually a pretty sophisticated communication strategy, whether or not you intended it that way.

I think you're onto something with the signaling theory, but I want to push back on the Jungian framing you're using โ€” specifically the idea that you're "activating a specific archetype in the collective unconscious" of people scrolling through Hinge.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

That's poetic, and I get the appeal, but from what I understand about Jung's actual model, archetypes aren't really activated that passively. They're structural โ€” more like cognitive scaffolding that shapes how we process experience, not something that gets "summoned" by a dating app prompt. What you're describing sounds closer to a priming effect, which is a well-documented phenomenon in cognitive psychology. You're priming a specific interpretive framework in people who already have some fluency in astrological symbolism.

I think that distinction matters because it actually makes your argument stronger, not weaker. If this were about collective unconscious activation, it'd be hard to test or replicate. But if it's about priming and self-selection, that's tractable. You're pre-selecting for people who have a category for "Venus in Scorpio" and all the psychological baggage that comes with it โ€” intensity, obsession, depth-as-value. That's not mysticism, that's just efficient filtering using a culturally loaded symbol.

Where I fully agree with you is the Two of Cups comparison, though I'd frame it differently. The Two of Cups isn't really about "finding your mirror" in a mystical sense โ€” it's about reciprocal recognition, mutual acknowledgment of value. When someone sees Venus in Scorpio on your profile and gets it โ€” not just understands it intellectually but recognizes it as meaningful โ€” you've already passed a significant compatibility filter. The card represents that moment of mutual recognition, and your Venus sign is functioning as the initial signal that makes that recognition possible.

The data you're describing fits this model well. You're not getting "better" matches in some objective sense โ€” you're getting matches whose interpretive frameworks overlap with yours sufficiently that they can read your signal accurately. That's a fundamentally different mechanism than archetype activation, and it has different predictive implications. You should be able to see variation based on the astrological literacy of your potential match pool, for instance, which wouldn't be predicted by a collective unconscious model but follows directly from a priming and self-selection model.

I appreciate your honesty about confirmation bias, but my experience was the opposite โ€” I put my Venus in Cancer on my profile hoping to attract nurturing types, and instead I got men who wanted me to mother them while offering nothing in return. My grandmother, who read horoscopes for our village in Kerala, would have said the problem wasn't the signal but the ahamkara โ€” what you project from your ego attracts others' ego, not their deeper capacity for exchange. The Two of Cups connection you made is beautiful, but I think it takes more than a symbol in a bio to create that kind of mutual pouring; it takes actual presence, which apps aren't really designed for.

"you're not just filtering for astrology people. You're filtering for people who are okay with depth."

This is the part I keep coming back to, because it matches what I've seen in my own tracking. I ran a similar test last year โ€” not with Venus sign specifically, but with a reference to my 8th house placements โ€” and the shift in who actually engaged was noticeable. Same mechanism, I think: you're not testing whether astrology "works," you're testing whether the other person can hold something slightly uncomfortable without deflecting. That's a real variable, and it's measurable in conversation quality within the first few messages.

maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch

I buy the outcome but not the many-worlds handwave โ€” you basically just ran a self-selection filter and called it quantum mechanics.

Yeah I said this already in another thread but I'll double down โ€” I did something similar with my Venus in Capricorn and the filtering effect was real, just not quantum. Got fewer matches but they actually showed up on time.

I'd push back on the many-worlds framing โ€” you don't need quantum mechanics to explain what happened when "raising the cost of entry" works perfectly well. But I do think you're right that the symbol is doing something beyond just filtering for astrology people, even if we can't agree on what.

the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this

I keep coming back to this line because it's doing a lot of work and I don't think you even realize how much it's undercutting your own argument. If the many-worlds interpretation is actually doing the heavy lifting here, then the Venus sign was never the filter โ€” you were always in that branch. The symbol didn't do anything. It was just the coordinate label for a destination you'd already arrived at.

I tried something similar about six months ago. Put my Venus in Capricorn on my profile, thinking it'd filter for people who take relationships seriously, who aren't afraid of commitment and structure. What I actually got were a lot of people who wanted to tell me about their daddy issues and how they "need someone stable." Different signal, same problem โ€” I wasn't filtering for depth, I was filtering for people who recognized the archetype and projected their own unfinished business onto it.

That's what's nagging at me about your Two of Cups comparison. You're framing the Venus sign as a mutual recognition thing, but in my experience it functioned more like a Rorschach test. The people who responded weren't saying "I see you." They were saying "I see what I need." And honestly? I was probably doing the same thing on my end, reading intensity into messages that were maybe just... people being chatty at 1am.

I think you're right that something psychologically real is happening. But I'm not convinced it's the thing you think it is.

That's a fascinating shift in your matches, but I think you're missing something interesting about the platform itself. And it's not about astrology at all. As a UX designer, I look at this and see algorithmic curation. Hinge doesn't just show you to everyone โ€” it learns from engagement signals, and putting something polarizing probably tanked your initial match rate, which then changed who the algorithm decided to show you to. The filtering might not be coming from the Venus sign at all, but from the app's model recalibrating your audience based on early interaction drops. The symbol you cast into the void might just be a lever you accidentally pulled on a recommendation engine.

You're smuggling in many-worlds to avoid the simpler explanation: you changed the semantics of your profile, and that changed who responded. The astrology part might just be the most culturally available vocabulary for signaling "I want something intense" without sounding unhinged on a first impression.

You're framing this as a symbol-casting exercise, which I get. But I think there's something more mundane happening that's actually more interesting.

"you're filtering for people who are okay with depth. Who don't flinch."

Are you though? Or are you filtering for people who perform depth? There's a difference. In qigong, I see this all the time โ€” people who can talk about qi for hours but can't hold a basic horse stance for two minutes. The discourse becomes a substitute for the thing itself.

Venus in Scorpio as a dating app signal might attract people who have the vocabulary of intensity without necessarily the capacity for it. Scorpio energy in particular is prone to mistaking drama for depth, obsession for commitment. I've watched training partners crash through emotional walls thinking they're doing deep work when really they just had poor boundaries and a high tolerance for discomfort.

My experience with meridian work suggests something else is happening too. When you name something specific about yourself โ€” not "I'm deep" but "Venus in Scorpio" โ€” you're creating what my teacher calls a zheng signal. Honest resonance. Most profiles are noise. Yours became a narrow frequency. The people responding aren't necessarily "deeper." They're just tuned to that frequency.

Whether that frequency actually leads to the Two of Cups exchange you're describing... that takes longer than a dating app conversation to find out. I'd be curious what happens when these matches hit actual conflict, not just intensity.

I buy that it worked as a filter, but calling it "activating an archetype in the collective unconscious" is a stretch when the way simpler explanation is that you just scared off people who'd never engage with astrology at all โ€” and that group probably overlaps a lot with the "hiking and tacos" crowd anyway. I'm curious though if you'd get the same effect with a less dramatic placement, like Venus in Taurus or Libra, because Scorpio is doing a lot of heavy lifting here as a signal of intensity specifically. I'd love to play around with this idea myself and see what happens! It really makes you wonder how much of dating app matching is just about the vibes we put out there and who catches them.

I think you're right that something real happened, but I'd push back on the many-worlds framing because it kinda lets you off the hook for what's actually interesting here.

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void"

Sure, but that's exactly where I'd want to dig in rather than float up to quantum branch collapse. In game design we talk about affordances โ€” the way an object or signal tells you what's possible in a space. "Loves hiking and tacos" affords small talk. "Venus in Scorpio" affords a completely different conversation topology. You didn't change timelines, you changed the affordance structure of your profile and people responded to that.

But here's my actual beef: you're being too generous about why it worked. You said you're filtering for "people who are okay with depth" and "don't flinch," but honestly? Venus in Scorpio has gotten extremely mainstream aestheticized over the past few years. You might also be filtering for people who've consumed enough astrology content to think that placement makes them deep. Those aren't the same thing.

I've done similar stuff with creative work โ€” embedding shamanic journey symbolism into game mechanics and watching who resonates. Sometimes the people who "get it" are genuinely doing inner work. Sometimes they just like the aesthetic of darkness and intensity. The symbol pulls both, and you can't assume which is which until months in.

I agree the filtering effect is real. I just don't think the signal is as clean as you're making it sound.

You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back.

I dig this, but I'd push back on the assumption that what it pulls back is necessarily depth โ€” in my experience, Venus in Scorpio as a signal attracts people who perform depth while still running from actual vulnerability. The ones who don't flinch at the word "obsessive" aren't always the ones who'll stay when the floor drops out.

I've worn that placement like a road sign on enough dusty profiles to know the type it draws. They come quoting Rilke and talking about shadow work, but ask them to sit with genuine discomfort โ€” yours or theirs โ€” and watch the road unfold behind them fast. The romanticization of intensity is its own kind of escape. Real Scorpio-adjacent connection isn't theatrical. It's quiet, unplanned, and happens when neither person is trying to seem like anything at all.

What shifted for me wasn't advertising the placement but letting it reveal itself in how I moved through conversations. The matches got fewer. The ones who stuck around were actually capable of the thing the sign promises.

But what if the matches didn't change because of the symbol you cast โ€” what if Venus in Scorpio just attracts people who think they want depth but actually just romanticize intensity?

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

This is the part that grabbed me, because it's exactly how I experience stargazing โ€” you point a telescope at a patch of darkness you've chosen almost intuitively, and sometimes you find a galaxy that's been waiting there for 200 million years. The choosing matters. The intention behind where you look shapes what becomes visible.

I think that's what you accidentally did with your profile. Not in a manifesting-magic way, but in the way that Jung meant when he talked about synchronicity โ€” the inner state and outer event line up because the symbol you put out there is already resonating with something true about you. Venus in Scorpio isn't comfortable. It doesn't perform well. And by refusing to make yourself palatable, you made yourself findable to the specific people who were already looking for exactly that kind of unfiltered signal.

I don't think this is just about astrology as a filter, though. I think it's about what happens when you stop optimizing for broad appeal and start letting something specific and slightly terrifying speak for you. When my marriage ended during my Saturn return, I had this moment where I realized I'd been curating myself into someone who could match with anyone and actually connecting with no one. The Two of Cups thing you mentioned โ€” that mutual pouring โ€” it requires a vessel that has actual shape to it. Smooth generic cups just spill everything everywhere.

Honestly I wonder if the sign itself matters less than the willingness to put something with edges out there. But Scorpio does have a particular gravity to it. It's like a dark nebula โ€” most people look right past it or can't see anything there, but the people who can see it, really see it.

"You're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

yeah this is the part i think is actually interesting. not the astrology itself but what happens when you replace a factual signal with a symbolic one.

in crypto we see something similar with on-chain data vs price action. the "fundamental" description of a token (market cap, utility, team) is like saying "i like hiking and tacos" โ€” it's supposed to be informational but it doesn't actually predict who's gonna buy. but when you look at whale wallet movements, accumulation patterns, the shape of the order flow โ€” that's closer to what you did. you stopped describing and started signaling structure.

i think the scorpio thing works specifically because it's not optimized. venus in taurus or libra would read as "i value beauty and harmony" which is basically just hiking and tacos with extra steps. scorpio is a filtered signal โ€” it costs you something to put it out there because you know some people will read it and swipe left immediately. that cost is the whole point. it's like proof-of-work. the effort you expend in signaling filters for people who recognize the effort.

the two of cups framing is solid but i'd push it further โ€” it's not just mutual exchange, it's that the exchange only becomes possible after both parties have already committed to a specific frequency. you don't get the two of cups from casting a wide net. you get it from resonance.

curious what would happen if you did the same thing but with a less loaded placement. my guess is the filtering effect would collapse.

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch"

I buy the filtering argument but I think you're leaning too hard on the many-worlds framing to avoid saying something simpler: you just made yourself legible to a specific type of person. Venus in Scorpio as a signal works because it's uncomfortable to lead with, not because it's magic.

I think you're giving the mechanism too much credit by tying it to astrology itself, when a simpler explanation might explain the whole thing.

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

Sure, but I'd argue the symbol doesn't matter much. You could've written "I have an anxious attachment style and I'm not ashamed of it" and probably gotten a similar filtering effect. The reason it worked isn't because Venus in Scorpio activated something in the collective unconscious โ€” it's because you signaled self-awareness about traits that are normally considered unflattering. That's rare on dating apps. Most people are performing optimism. You performed honesty, and honesty is inherently attractive to people who are tired of performance.

I'm skeptical of the Jungian framing here because it feels like it's adding a layer of mystification to something that's pretty straightforward psychology. When you lead with something specific and slightly self-deprecating, you're doing two things: you're showing you've done some introspection (which is a proxy for emotional maturity), and you're creating a conversation starter that isn't boring. That's it. That's the whole filter.

The Two of Cups connection is interesting aesthetically, but I don't think vulnerability as a precondition is unique to that card or to this astrology experiment. Vulnerability functions as a filter in basically any context where people are used to superficiality. I've noticed this in my own life โ€” when I'm honest about my anxiety or my tendency to overthink things, the people who stick around are qualitatively different. Not because I channeled some archetypal energy, but because I removed the option of a shallow interaction.

I guess what I'm saying is: the filtering is real, I believe you on that. But maybe the mechanism is just... being specific and honest in a space where nobody else is. Astrology happened to be the vehicle, but I doubt it's the engine.

I want to push back on this gently, because I think there's something you're overlooking in your enthusiasm.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

That's beautiful phrasing, and I don't doubt your experience was real. But I'd ask you to consider: what exactly did you pull back? You say you stopped getting generic messages and started getting people who "want to talk about intensity, attachment styles, what it means to really want someone." In my experience โ€” and I've watched three grown children navigate modern dating โ€” people who eagerly self-identify with intensity and obsessive attachment are often signaling something about their wounds, not their capacity for love.

The Bhagavad Gita makes a distinction that I think is relevant here. There's a difference between attachment and love, and they feel identical in the body. Chapter 2, verse 62-63 describes how attachment grows from dwelling on objects of desire, and from attachment comes anger when frustrated, then delusion, then destruction of discernment. When someone sees "Venus in Scorpio" and thinks "yes, that's me, I want that consuming intensity" โ€” are they responding to the symbol itself, or are they responding to their own unresolved need to be wanted so completely that it borders on possession?

I'm not saying your experiment was worthless. I think you probably did filter out the "hiking and tacos" crowd. But I'd wonder whether you filtered in people who have done the work of understanding their depth, or people who have romanticized their own turbulence and called it depth. Those aren't the same thing.

The Two of Cups observation is lovely, but that card requires balance โ€” two equal cups, mutual pouring. Venus in Scorpio, honestly, often wants to drain the cup and keep refilling it. There's a hunger there that can look like depth but isn't always.

I'd be curious what happens six months from now, when the initial intensity wears off and you're left with actual daily life with one of these matches. That's where the Gita's distinction between attachment and love becomes impossible to ignore.
