You asked if you're overfitting the narrative, and honestly? I think you are โ€” the Campbell framework you're using to interpret this is itself a narrative structure, and you might be mistaking a satisfying story for evidence of something acausal.

I think your conclusion is solid โ€” this relationship clearly asked something important of you, and the symbolism mapped onto that beautifully. But I'm going to push back a little on the methodology here, because as someone who stares at data patterns for a living, this part caught my eye:

"I'm self-aware enough to consider [overfitting the narrative]"

You named it, but I don't think you fully grappled with it. The 7th house is the partnership house. Dropping a partner's "fortune point" in there and finding it meaningful is... kind of what the system is designed to produce? It'd be more striking if it landed somewhere counterintuitive โ€” like the 12th or the 6th โ€” and you still felt that fated quality. I'm not saying the insight is wrong, but the filtering might be tighter than you realize.

That said, where I think you're actually onto something real is the Campbell/Jung framing rather than the astrological technique itself. The Part of Fortune as a symbolic checkpoint for where your growth-treasure lives โ€” that's useful regardless of whether the chart math is "objective." James Hillman would probably say the image is doing the work, not the calculation. And honestly, that's enough. I've been reading his "Re-Visioning Psychology" lately and it's helped me stop getting hung up on whether a technique is "true" and start asking whether it's meaningful. If that angle interests you, "The Mythic Path" by David Feinstein and Stanley Krippner pairs well with that Hillman approach โ€” less about chart mechanics and more about what happens when you treat these symbols as living material.

So yeah, I buy the conclusion. I just think the Arabic part is the least interesting part of what you've uncovered here. The real story is what you did with the frame after you found it.

You asked if you're overfitting the narrative, and I think you are โ€” but not in the way you mean. What if the Part of Fortune isn't describing why you met, but what your nervous system already needed to find? When I'm painting after ceremony, the sacred geometry that comes through isn't random โ€” it's what my body was already holding and trying to release. I'd flip the whole framework: the treasure wasn't buried in your relational unconscious waiting to be found, it's the shape your psyche already was before they arrived, and the astrology just gave you a language for it after the fact.

The seventh house has always carried this weight of recognition for me โ€” not recognition of the other person, but recognition of yourself through them. Like catching your reflection in still water and mistaking it for someone else reaching back. The Part of Fortune sitting there in your partner's chart, pointing at your seventh house, reads less like destiny and more like a mirror positioned exactly where your blind spot was. You didn't meet them because the chart said so. You met them because something in you was already shaped like the doorway they walked through.

I've sat with enough charts now, mine and others', to notice that the moments we call fated are usually the moments our internal geometry finally found its match. The astrology comes after. Always after. We draw the map once we've already arrived.

"I think what's happening here relates to Jung's synchronicity concept โ€” not mere coincidence, but an acausal connecting principle"

This resonates with me because in my family's jyotisha practice, we'd say you're recognizing a pattern that was already there before either of you named it. I've seen something similar in my own marriage โ€” my husband's chart carries a very specific dasha timing that aligned with when I entered my seventh house period, and neither of us planned that. The pattern doesn't cause the relationship, but it does seem to be the shape the relationship moves through.

            "I'm self-aware enough to consider"

I appreciate the caveat at the end because honestly that's where my brain went immediately โ€” you're building a retrofitted narrative that feels meaningful, which is exactly what confirmation bias does best. The Part of Fortune is a calculated point, sure, but you're selectively pulling one partner's point into your chart and finding significance in one specific house placement out of twelve possibilities. From a software perspective, that's a pretty loose query โ€” you'd get a hit somewhere meaningful almost by definition. I'm not saying the relationship doesn't feel fated or that your Campbell framework isn't genuinely useful for understanding it. But I think the astrology here is doing what astrology usually does: providing a symbolic language for an experience that's already emotionally resonant, then claiming the symbol predicted the experience rather than just describing it after the fact.

So my partner's "fortune point" landing there feels like... I don't know, like the treasure was already buried in the soil of my relational unconscious before I ever knew to dig.

I think you're onto something real here, and I don't think you're overfitting โ€” but I do think you're giving the technique more credit than it maybe earned on its own. Let me explain what I mean.

My grandmother gave me my first Rider-Waite deck when I was 22, and she was the one who taught me to read. She didn't know a thing about Arabic parts or composite charts. What she did know was how to sit with someone and listen until the story underneath the question came out. And here's what I've noticed in twenty years of reading for couples โ€” the people who are actually going to stay together, the ones where you pull the Two of Cups and it just sits there like it owns the spread, they always describe meeting each other in similar terms. Not "love at first sight" exactly. More like recognition. Like they'd already agreed to something before they walked into the room.

That's what your post reminds me of. The Part of Fortune landing on your descendant might be the astrological language for it, but I think the thing you're describing โ€” that sense of the treasure already being buried โ€” that's deeper than any one technique. My hunch is that if you'd never calculated that part and just pulled cards about how you met, you'd have gotten the Wheel or the Lovers showing up in a position that said the same thing. The map changes. The territory doesn't.

The Campbell angle is interesting to me though, because I think it actually explains why this felt like a revelation when it did. You'd already done the hard work of the relationship. You'd already made that choice the Lovers card demands. Finding the Part of Fortune placement afterward โ€” that's not proof of destiny so much as it's the hero coming back with the boon and finally having language for what they already lived through.

I'd be curious if you'd looked at your Part of Fortune in their 7th house too, or if this was one-directional. In my experience, the really fated-feeling connections tend to show up both ways, though not always in the same house.

"something in the pattern recognized something in theirs"

What if nothing in you recognized anything? What if a part who doesn't even front during your waking life did the recognizing, and the narrative you're building now is a different part's attempt to make sense of a decision they weren't consulted on?

I'm not saying the Part of Fortune placement isn't real or meaningful. But the way you're framing it โ€” "my relational unconscious," "the treasure was already buried" โ€” assumes a singular self who was doing the burying and the digging. In my experience, that's not how this works. We met our partner because a young part who doesn't have language for what she wanted saw safety in someone's nervous system. The chart came later. The meaning-making came way later.

I think Jung actually backs me up here more than you might think โ€” his concept of complexes isn't just "hidden aspects of one personality," it's more like semi-autonomous splinters that can take over the ego. Which, you know. Is literally what DID is. So when you talk about the 7th house as a "projection field," I'd ask: which part of you is doing the projecting? Because in my system, the part who holds our partnership template is not the part who writes forum posts about Campbell.

The hero's journey framework you love โ€” honestly, I think it might be the wrong map for this. The hero is one person who leaves, struggles, returns transformed. But what if you're not one person? What if the "departure" was actually one part handing the steering wheel to another part, and the "return" is the first part waking up confused in a life she didn't choose?

I'm not trying to deflate your experience. The synchronicity might still be real. But I think the question isn't "what does this placement mean for my relationship" โ€” it's "who inside me needed this placement to mean something?"

"I'm not saying Arabic parts are hard scientific evidence of destiny or anything. I think that's a category error."

You say that, but then spend the rest of the post doing exactly what you're claiming not to do โ€” weaving a narrative where this chart placement explains why you met. That's the thing about symbolic mapping tools. They're seductive. You're using confirmation bias and calling it synchronicity.

I've been doing this stuff for decades, and I've seen people find "fated" meaning in placements that were honestly random. The Part of Fortune in the 7th house of a partner's chart? There are only twelve houses. You're telling me that wouldn't have felt meaningful no matter where it landed? Put it in the 4th and suddenly you'd be writing about how your home together was destined. 10th house? Your shared public legacy.

I'm not saying the relationship doesn't feel fated to you. It clearly does, and that's real in the sense that your experience of it is genuine. But you're smart enough to know that Jung also warned about projections โ€” and this reads like you're projecting meaning onto a mathematical point after the fact, then retroactively calling it a quest marker.

The Campbell framework is doing a lot of heavy lifting here too. When you go looking for the hero's journey, you find it everywhere. That's what it's designed to do.

Doesn't mean the relationship isn't good. Just means maybe the chart isn't telling you as much as you think it is.

"I'm curious if the house placement matched the actual felt experience of the relationship, or if I'm just overfitting the narrative here"

I checked this with my ex โ€” her Part of Fortune landed in my 12th house, and yeah, there was definitely hidden stuff, but it was all the things I was deliberately ignoring, not some mystical treasure. Maybe the part just illuminates the house, not necessarily in a "good" way.

"like the treasure was already buried in the soil of my relational unconscious before I ever knew to dig"

I love this image, but I want to push back on it gently because my own experience with synastry stuff was the opposite. My ex's Part of Fortune landed in my 8th house โ€” the house of death, transformation, shadow work. And yeah, that relationship absolutely cracked me open. But here's the complication: the "treasure" I found there wasn't him. It was something I had to excavate alone after he was gone.

So when you say it feels fated, I get it. I really do. But I wonder if the Part of Fortune in synastry shows you where the relationship will force you to look for your treasure, not necessarily where you'll find it. The geometry I paint after ceremony sometimes shows me a door. Walking through it is something else entirely.

In my experience, the pattern recognition is real โ€” I'm not dismissing that. But I've become suspicious of any astrological marker that feels too much like confirmation. The confirmation bias is especially sneaky in spiritual communities because we've already agreed that meaning exists everywhere. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Just that we should be careful what we build on it.

I think you already know the answer and you're just being polite about it. Look, I'm a pretty new reader so maybe I'm out of my lane here, but this feels like exactly the kind of confirmation bias that screws up my tarot interpretations all the time. You pulled one specific technique, applied it in one specific direction (why not your Part of Fortune in their 7th house? why not both?), and got a result that perfectly mirrors what you already feel about the relationship.

Carl Jung himself warned about this โ€” he called it the "subjective canon" problem in dream interpretation, where you can always find the meaning you're already looking for if you try hard enough. Synchronicity is a cool framework, but it's basically unfalsifiable as a concept. If the Part of Fortune landed in the 12th house, you'd probably be writing a post about hidden treasure and the unconscious. If it hit the 6th, something about daily rituals and sacred mundane.

I'm not saying the connection isn't real or meaningful to you. But I don't think the astrology is doing the work here โ€” I think you are. The meaning was already in the relationship. The chart is just a mirror you're holding up to it. Which, honestly, is fine? But I'd be more honest about that than wrapping it in synchronicity language that makes it sound like the stars decided this for you.

"I'm self-aware enough to consider" [that I'm overfitting the narrative]

That's the part that actually matters here, and I think you deserve credit for saying it out loud because most people won't. I've seen enough confirmation bias in my life โ€” both in the service and in spiritual communities โ€” to know that the human mind is a pattern-matching machine that will happily construct meaning from noise.

But here's where I think your Campbell/Jung framing actually saves this from being just another "the stars aligned" post. You're not claiming the Part of Fortune caused the relationship. You're treating it as a symbolic retrospective โ€” a way to map meaning onto something that already happened. That's a fundamentally different move than prediction, and honestly, it's closer to how Jung actually used astrology himself. He didn't think the planets made things happen. He thought the horoscope worked like a dream โ€” a snapshot of psychic moment.

I'd push your Lovers card connection a little further though. The Lovers card in the Rider-Waite deck isn't just about choice โ€” there's an angel above, a serpent and tree behind the woman, a tree of flames behind the man. It's a whole landscape of competing forces. If this relationship feels fated but not easy, that's the card. The "fortune" isn't comfort. It's the friction that forces alignment.

I don't do synastry comparisons myself โ€” my practice is more internal, breathwork and sitting with whatever comes up. But I respect this as a mapping tool. The question I'd ask: does this framework change how you act in the relationship, or is it just a beautiful way to describe what's already there? Because description without application is just decoration.

I hear you, and the Campbell framing is genuinely elegant. But I have to push back because my experience with this technique went somewhere much messier than "treasure in the relational unconscious."

I did the same thing with my ex. Her Part of Fortune landed in my 8th house โ€” which on paper should've been this intense, transformative, death-and-rebirth bonding experience. And yeah, it was intense. But it destroyed me. That relationship was the catalyst for the crisis that nearly killed me. So when you say "not easy, but fated in a way that demands something from me," I get it โ€” but I'd push harder. Sometimes the treasure is buried in a grave.

"as a symbolic mapping tool? This hit different."

Here's my problem with that framing: it assumes the symbol points toward integration. But what if the symbol is just honest? What if your partner's fortune landing on your descendant means exactly what it says โ€” that their fulfillment is entangled with your partnership field โ€” and that can be generative OR devouring? Jung was pretty explicit that the anima/animus projection can consume you if you don't withdraw it. The treasure doesn't care if you survive digging it up.

I'm not saying your reading is wrong. I'm saying the map might be more neutral than you want it to be. And after what I went through, I don't trust "fated" as a synonym for "good."

But as a symbolic mapping tool? This hit different.

yeah this is the part I agree with most hahaha. like I think you're being really honest about what astrology actually does for people โ€” it gives you a framework to make meaning out of something that feels meaningful but you can't quite articulate. I don't think that's "overfitting" at all, it's just... how humans work with symbols?

personally I just went through a breakup and I caught myself doing the exact opposite โ€” trying to find the astrological reason it wouldn't work, like if I could just locate the "flaw" in the synastry I could somehow make the pain make sense ๐Ÿ˜… didn't work obviously. but what you're describing here, using the chart to deepen your understanding of why something did land the way it did โ€” that feels way more useful to me.

I'm not deep into Arabic parts or anything, but the way you connected it back to Campbell's hero's journey stuff actually makes me want to look into it more. the "quest marker" metaphor is good lol ๐Ÿ˜‚

I think you might already know the answer to that second option. I tried this exact technique with my ex and his Part of Fortune landed in my 7th too โ€” right on the descendant, almost spooky-precise โ€” and that relationship was genuinely one of the most draining things I've been through. So the house placement matched in the sense that partnership was absolutely the arena, but "treasure" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Liz Greene talks about how astrological signatures show the terrain of the experience, not whether that experience resolves as blessing or wound, and I think that's worth sitting with before you lock this into a destiny narrative.

If you want to pull on this thread more, her book "The Astrology of Fate" really walks through this difference between what the chart promises and how we actually live it out. Steven Forrest's "The Inner Sky" is another good one for understanding house placements as experiential territory rather than fixed outcomes. Both helped me stop treating 7th house connections as automatically meaningful in a positive sense.

The synchronicity framing makes sense to me, but I'd push back on tying the Part of Fortune that tightly to Jung's anima/animus โ€” that's more about your own unintegrated content, not someone else's chart point landing in your relational sector. I think what you're describing is closer to what in qigong we'd call resonance between two systems โ€” not projection, but actual pattern recognition. That said, your point about astrology functioning as a symbolic language rather than a predictive law is exactly right, and I think that's what keeps this from being pure narrative overfitting.

"as a symbolic mapping tool? This hit different."

I keep wondering if you're giving the placement too much credit and not questioning the act of looking itself. Like, the Part of Fortune could've landed in any of your houses and you'd have found a Campbell narrative to fit it โ€” confirmation bias doesn't disappear just because the symbolism is rich. That's not me dismissing it, but I think the question isn't "why did it land there" but rather "what were you seeking when you calculated it in the first place."

                                      "I'm self-aware enough to consider"

That line keeps sitting with me. Because here's the thing โ€” I've noticed in my own chart work for friends that the moments I feel most "self-aware" about confirmation bias are often the moments I'm deepest in it. Daniel Kahneman actually wrote about this โ€” we don't notice our own biases even when we're explicitly looking for them. The machinery hides itself.

And I say this as someone who has absolutely done the same thing. I once found a synastry overlay that seemed too perfect to be coincidence, spent weeks building a narrative around it, and then later realized I'd been using an approximate birth time that shifted the house placements by several degrees. The "meaning" vanished, but the story I'd told myself about the relationship didn't. Which sort of proved that the meaning was coming from me, not the chart.

I don't think that makes the experience meaningless. I think the OP is genuinely describing something real about how this relationship feels โ€” that sense of decisive alignment, the Lovers card energy they mentioned. That's valid. But I'd push back gently on the idea that the Arabic part calculation is explanatory rather than descriptive. You had the felt experience first. The chart gave it a language.

The danger I keep circling back to in my own practice is when we start believing the map is why the territory exists. Your partner's Part of Fortune didn't cause you to meet. Something in you recognized something in them โ€” that's the actual event. The astrological symbolism is a framework you're layering on afterward, which is fine, but it's not the same as the thing itself. I think the OP knows this, honestly. But saying "I'm self-aware enough to consider" the alternative doesn't mean you've actually escaped the pattern. It might just mean you've incorporated doubt into the narrative itself.

"I'm curious if the house placement matched the actual felt experience of the relationship, or if I'm just overfitting the narrative here"

You're overfitting, but I agree with your conclusion anyway โ€” the symbolism works because you're already in the relationship and your pattern-seeking mind found the thread, not because the thread was woven for you.

"like the treasure was already buried in the soil of my relational unconscious before I ever knew to dig."

This line gave me chills because it mirrors something I've felt looking up at the same stars my partner was born under, knowing the light that hit them at birth was already ancient when it reached me. I don't think you're overfitting โ€” I think you found a language for something that's hard to articulate, which is kind of what the best symbolism does.
