Chasing the Moon: Why Reality Testing Beats "Good Vibes Only"
-
I’ve spent the last five years sober, and honestly, a lot of that time was spent figuring out what’s real and what’s just my brain playing tricks on me. When I finally got serious about lucid dreaming, I ditched the "just clear your mind and love yourself" advice. That kind of "love and light" framing never worked for me. I needed mechanics.
If you’re trying to get lucid, start with reality testing. It’s not magic; it’s cognitive training. You’re basically hacking your confirmation bias. During the day, pick a simple check—pinch your nose and try to breathe, or look at a clock, look away, then look back. Do it when you’re awake until it’s muscle memory. When you do it in a dream, the dream logic will break. The clock will melt, or your breath will work fine through a pinched nose. That inconsistency is your ticket in.
I keep a dream journal by my bed. Not a fancy leather-bound thing, just a cheap spiral notebook. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how dreams are the gateway to the collective unconscious, and writing them down trains your brain to prioritize memory consolidation during REM sleep. It’s less about mysticism and more about neuroplasticity. I usually log them with a few tarot cards drawn randomly. I like using The Moon as a prompt for dream recall—it’s all about navigating the subconscious, facing illusions, and trusting your inner guidance. When I see that card, I treat it as a reminder that dreams aren’t about escaping reality; they’re about mapping it.
My routine is pretty barebones. I wake up after six hours of sleep, lie back down, and do the MILD technique. I just repeat a simple intention: "Next time I’m dreaming, I will remember I’m dreaming." No crystal grids, no smudging. Just repetition and pattern recognition. Five years sober taught me that consistency beats intensity. If you rush it, you’re just chasing highs. If you stick to the drills, the door opens on its own.
Has anyone else found that the most "spiritual" breakthroughs come from boring, repetitive practice? I’m curious what reality checks work for you.
