The Heat That Heals: Kundalini Yoga as Inner Alchemy
-
I spent years walking the streets of Lisbon, sorting and delivering mail. That work taught me rhythm, patience, and how to move through physical space without rushing. After leaving the postal service, I drifted between the rigid doctrines of my religious upbringing and the stark skepticism of college, only to eventually circle back toward this quiet, unnameable pull I can’t quite label. Lately, Kundalini yoga has become my laboratory for that search.
The benefits go far beyond flexibility. In psychology, William James argued that our physiological state shapes our emotional experience—we don’t feel sad and then cry; we cry, and the feeling follows. Kundalini practice flips that script. Through breath control, asanas, and mantra, you train the body to regulate the nervous system. The heat that rises isn’t just physical; it’s a somatic cue that recalibrates mental clarity, anxiety, and focus. It’s embodied cognition in action: the body leads, the mind follows.
If I had to map this process onto the Tarot, I’d point to the High Priestess. That card embodies hidden knowledge, intuition, and the threshold between known and unknown—exactly where I’ve been wandering. Kundalini awakens that latent current, much like the serpent symbolized in the practice. As the energy rises, it mirrors the Empress: fertile, grounded, and deeply connected to natural rhythms. The alchemical work isn’t about forcing transformation; it’s about creating the right conditions for the inner fire to do its work.
I’m still far from pinning down whatever it is I’m chasing, but the practice keeps me honest. How do you navigate the space between skepticism and spiritual longing? Has your own somatic practice shifted how you experience emotion or intuition? I’d love to hear how you’ve woven body, mind, and symbol together.
