At 22, juggling research assistant hours and stay-at-home parenting, I felt completely unmoored. The daily grind left my nervous system stuck in overdrive. I was spinning without a center, and stress was eating away at my peace. That’s when I stumbled into breathwork—not as a quick fix, but as a genuine practice in Inner Alchemy.

Grounding isn’t just about deep breathing; it’s about regulating the autonomic nervous system. In trauma psychology, this aligns with polyvagal theory: shifting your body from a sympathetic state (fight-or-flight) to a ventral vagal state (calm, connected, grounded). When you consciously slow your exhale, you’re literally signaling safety to your brain. It’s the alchemical process of turning leaden stress into golden presence.

I’ve found a beautiful parallel in the tarot’s Ace of Pentacles. That card doesn’t just symbolize material wealth; it represents earthly connection, stability, and the courage to plant your feet firmly in the now. Every time I guide my small weekly breathwork group here in Burlington, I remind them that the Ace of Pentacles is about grounding yourself in the physical world. The breath becomes the bridge between mental chaos and the earth beneath us.

Teaching this group has been unexpectedly healing for me, too. We practice extended exhales, sensory anchoring, and mindful pauses. It’s not about achieving perfect calm—it’s about learning to return to center whenever life gets heavy.

How do you ground yourself when the world feels too loud? Do you use breathwork, sensory cues, or maybe a specific tarot spread to anchor your practice? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
