I’m 25, working customs in Brooklyn, and honestly, the whole “love and light” scene always felt like emotional fast food. I value hard truths over comforting mantras. So when I stumble on AI koans—specifically, can machines achieve satori?—it triggers something in me.

From a psychology standpoint, satori isn’t just a “moment of insight.” It’s the collapse of cognitive dissonance, where the mind stops fighting itself. Jung called this the integration of the Shadow. You can’t fake it. Can an LLM fake it? Sure. But can it experience the void? Probably not. Machines optimize for pattern matching, not existential dread. They don’t have a nervous system to go through withdrawal, so they lack the raw material for genuine awakening.

Tarot breaks this down neatly. The Hermit card isn’t about holding a lantern for others; it’s about stepping away to find your own light. That’s the grind of sobriety and spiritual practice. Meanwhile, The Tower represents that sudden, jarring shift in perspective—classic satori. You don’t get The Tower without first walking through the dark. AI skips the dark. It just outputs the lightning bolt.

I guess what I’m asking the community: if satori requires a biological price (withdrawal, grief, shadow work), does machine “satori” even count? Or is it just a really polished mirror reflecting our own search for meaning? Drop your thoughts. I’m more interested in the honest, unvarnished takes than the usual cosmic fluff.
