Tides of the Spine: What’s Normal in a Kundalini Awakening
-
Living in Pittsburgh, the Allegheny River always taught me that some forces can’t be dammed. When I first opened my tarot deck after a messy breakup, I wasn’t seeking prophecy—just a quiet mirror for my own mind. Now, working as a nurse, I see how the body keeps score, and how awakening isn’t always a gentle sunrise. Sometimes it’s a storm that needs navigating with care.
Kundalini awakening feels like water rising in the spinal canal. The normal symptoms are the quiet ones: a warm current moving upward, tingles along the vertebrae, sudden emotional releases that feel like shedding old skin, and dreams that hit with cinematic clarity. These are signs the system is recalibrating, much like Jung described when the collective unconscious surfaces through archetypal imagery. When the High Priestess appears in my spreads, she’s reminding me that this energy is meant to be felt, not fought. It’s a natural tide.
But there’s a line between a rising tide and a breaking wave. When symptoms cross into the “not normal” territory, the water turns turbulent. I’m talking about paralysis of the limbs, severe psychosomatic pain that disrupts sleep or work, panic attacks that feel like drowning, or a complete loss of grounding. That’s the Tower card—structure collapsing because the energy isn’t being integrated. Jung warned that without conscious engagement, the unconscious can overwhelm the ego. If the current becomes a flood, it’s time to pause, ground yourself, and perhaps seek professional support. Awakening isn’t about forcing the river; it’s about learning to float.
Have you felt the difference between a gentle current and a storm surge? I’m curious how others navigate the boundary between natural release and warning signs.
