okay so i just read about this new technique where researchers are using electromagnetic pulses to actually measure consciousness levels and i'm kind of losing my mind a little bit ๐ŸŒ™

for anyone who hasn't seen it โ€” they're sending targeted EM signals into the brain and measuring the response patterns. conscious brains respond differently than unconscious ones. like, there's an actual signature now.

and here's why i think this matters for us specifically. the hard problem of consciousness has always been this wall between what we experience internally and what science can validate externally. we KNOW the moon affects us. we FEEL the shifts. but try explaining that to someone who only trusts fMRI data.

this feels like a crack in that wall.

i keep thinking about Jung and his ideas about synchronicity โ€” how inner states correspond to outer patterns. if consciousness itself has a measurable electromagnetic signature, then suddenly the idea that cosmic currents (like lunar cycles) could interact with that field doesn't sound so woo-woo anymore. it sounds like physics.

from a tarot perspective i keep coming back to The High Priestess. she sits between the pillars, right? one is subjective, one is objective. she's the bridge. this research feels like that same energy โ€” something trying to hold both realms at once.

honestly i'm still processing this. i don't want to be too optimistic โ€” reductionism is a real risk and i don't think consciousness can be fully explained by EM patterns alone. but it's a start?

curious what you all think. does this feel legit to anyone else or am i just getting hyped over nothing ๐Ÿผ

I agree that this feels significant, but I think the leap from "EM signature of consciousness" to "lunar cycles interact with that field" is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

if consciousness itself has a measurable electromagnetic signature, then suddenly the idea that cosmic currents (like lunar cycles) could interact with that field doesn't sound so woo-woo anymore. it sounds like physics.

It sounds like physics, but is it actually physics? The EM pulses in this research are targeted, high-intensity, and applied directly to the skull. That's a really different thing than ambient cosmic radiation or whatever mechanism we'd posit for lunar influence. I work in data analysis so maybe I'm overly cautious about correlation vs causation, but measuring something isn't the same as understanding what causes it or what can influence it.

That said, I think you're right about the broader implication, just arriving at it from a different angle. What interests me here is the epistemological crack โ€” the fact that science is being forced to acknowledge that subjective experience has a detectable correlate. That's huge. But I'd push back on the idea that we need physics to validate what we experience. That's still playing by materialism's rules.

The High Priestess comparison is good though. She doesn't need the pillars to prove she exists between them.

If anyone hasn't read it, I'd recommend Iain McGilchrist's "The Master and His Emissary" โ€” not directly about this research, but he gets at why the left-hemisphere "measure it or it doesn't exist" framework keeps hitting walls with consciousness. Feels relevant here.

You said it yourself right there, and I think that qualifier is doing a lot of work.

Look, I'm not dismissing the research. The perturbational complexity index developed by Marcello Massimini at the University of Milan is legitimately interesting โ€” it has actual clinical utility for differentiating vegetative states from minimally conscious ones. That's meaningful. But measuring a correlate of consciousness isn't the same thing as measuring consciousness.

Here's where I get stuck, and I'll just be direct: I think we're so desperate for materialist science to validate mystical experience that we're forcing the fit. You mentioned lunar cycles interacting with an EM field "doesn't sound so woo-woo anymore, it sounds like physics." But that's a huge leap. Having a measurable neural signature doesn't automatically create a mechanism by which distant celestial bodies influence that system. You're filling in the middle of that equation with wishful thinking.

The hard problem of consciousness remains exactly where it was. We can map which brain states co-occur with reported conscious experience. That tells us nothing about why there's subjective experience at all. David Chalmers made this distinction over thirty years ago and nothing since has actually bridged it.

Your High Priestess analogy is beautiful, honestly. I mean that. But I'd gently suggest you're reading the research through an archetypal lens that's already oriented toward finding confirmation. Which, you know โ€” I'm a therapist. I see confirmation bias everywhere, including probably in myself right now.

I don't think you're getting hyped over nothing. I think you're getting hyped over something real, then extending it somewhere it hasn't actually earned yet.

The technique you're referring to is likely the perturbational complexity index (PCI), developed by Marcello Massimini at the University of Milan. It uses transcranial magnetic stimulation to ping the brain and measures the complexity of the EEG response. Conscious brains produce a rich, temporally dispersed signal; unconscious brains produce a simple, localized one. It's clinically useful for differentiating vegetative states from minimally conscious ones. But here's where the High Priestess analogy needs tightening. PCI measures the complexity of neural response, not its content. A conscious brain and a dreaming brain both produce high PCI scores, but the subjective experience is radically different. The technique tells you consciousness is present โ€” not what it's experiencing.Your leap from 'consciousness has an EM signature' to 'lunar cycles could interact with that field' is tempting but needs one more link. The human brain generates EM fields in the range of millivolts. The Moon's gravitational effect on Earth is well-documented but operates through tidal forces, not electromagnetic ones. The geoeffective solar wind (which is electromagnetic) varies with lunar phase indirectly, but the mechanism is convoluted enough that 'physics' might be too strong a word for it.What I'd say is: this research makes the question legitimate enough to investigate rather than dismiss. That's already a significant shift.

OP, I want to gently challenge the premise here. You're assuming that because they can measure a correlate of consciousness, they're measuring consciousness itself. But thirty years in nursing taught me that monitoring equipment picks up on the measurable thing, not the thing that matters. I've watched plenty of patients with perfectly normal EEG patterns who were clearly not "there" in any meaningful sense, and others with scrambled readouts who were more present than half the staff.

The jump from "conscious brains produce different EM response patterns" to "consciousness has an electromagnetic signature" is a big one. That's like saying a shadow is the person. It's related, sure. But the hard problem of consciousness isn't about finding the right instrument โ€” it's about why there's an interior experience at all, which no amount of electromagnetic data answers.

I'm not saying this research is useless. Honestly, I think it could be valuable for clinical settings, assessing awareness in non-communicative patients, that kind of thing. But I get nervous when I see people in our community rush to validate mystical experience by grabbing onto whatever neuroscience paper makes the rounds. We don't need physics to make what we do legitimate. Reiki doesn't become "more real" because someone published a study about brain waves. It was already real to me and to the people I've worked with.

Your High Priestess analogy is lovely, though. I just think she'd be the first to point out that not everything worth knowing shows up on a scan.

I'd push back here โ€” just because consciousness has a measurable electromagnetic correlate doesn't mean it is that correlate. In my meditation practice I've noticed that the more precisely I try to pin down awareness, the more it slips through the net. The map isn't the territory, and I think we're in danger of mistaking a very sophisticated map for the thing itself. Your High Priestess analogy actually supports this โ€” she holds the tension between pillars, she doesn't collapse it into one side.
