I used to spend my days in a molecular biology lab, chasing data points that promised objective truth. Now, living in Brooklyn, I balance the spreadsheets of my accounting job with energy healing sessions. This shift made Chögyam Trunpa's concept of 'spiritual materialism' hit me hard. Trunpa argued that we often treat spiritual practices as tools to polish our egos rather than dismantle them. It's the psychological defense mechanism where the 'self' co-opts the 'sacred' to feel superior.

In psychology, we call this ego reinforcement. The mind seeks to protect itself by turning vulnerability into a badge of honor. You start a meditation practice not to find inner peace, but to feel like an 'enlightened seeker'. It's cognitive dissonance dressed in incense. The danger is that we use metaphysics to build a fortress around our identity rather than tearing it down.

When I look at the Tarot, this dynamic shows up clearly in The Devil. The card isn't just about evil; it's about being trapped by your own desires and illusions. Spiritual materialism is exactly that—being chained to the ego's need to be 'special'. Conversely, The Tower forces the structure down. Real growth often requires that demolition, not just rearranging the furniture. As someone who moved from hard science to the messy world of energy work, I see how easily we confuse spiritual progress with ego inflation. Trunpa's critique is a necessary check against turning our practices into just another resume builder. The ego is always watching, ready to hijack the sacred. Accounting demands balance, but healing demands surrender, and that's where the trap lies. We must ask ourselves: are we practicing to dissolve the self, or to make the self look good? Trunpa's warning is that spiritual materialism is the ego's final defense, using the language of enlightenment to build a higher wall.
