Beyond the Blank Page: My Ashram Guide to Automatic Writing
-
I remember sitting in a cold monastery in the Himalayas. No internet. Just a notebook. The monks taught me that automatic writing isn't about creating a masterpiece. It's about shutting up the inner critic.
Start with a timer. Five minutes. Ten minutes. Whatever works. Don't stop. If your mind goes blank, write "my mind is blank" until something else emerges.
This is pure flow state. Psychologists call it bypassing the prefrontal cortex. You're letting the subconscious drive. Carl Jung called it active imagination. You're having a dialogue with your shadow.
In tarot, think of the Moon. That card is all about the deep, murky waters of the mind. Automatic writing dives right into those depths. It's also the Star. Healing. Inspiration. Letting the water flow freely.
As a florist, I see the same thing with plants. You don't yank the stem to make it grow. You provide the soil and let it happen. Automatic journaling is the soil.
I use it for divination prep. I clear the mental static. I ask a question, then let the pen answer. The words that come out aren't always logical. That's the point. They're intuitive.
Keep a dedicated notebook. Don't use an app. The friction of paper helps you slow down.
Try it tonight. Set the timer. Let the ink flow. See what surfaces.
It works. I've seen it work in ashrams and flower shops. Your subconscious is smarter than you think. Trust the process. The pen knows more than you do.
