August in Madison doesn’t just bring heat; it brings a quiet reverence. When I’m behind the wheel, miles from the city, I sometimes catch the faint scent of incense drifting from neighborhood courtyards. It’s Ghost Month—when the veil between worlds grows thin, and old rituals surface like morning fog.

I’ve come to see these August rites not as superstition, but as emotional architecture. In therapy training, we talk about the “holding environment”—a safe container for grief, memory, and the parts of ourselves we’ve locked away. Ghost Month offerings are exactly that: a ritualized space to acknowledge loss without drowning in it. It’s attachment made visible. We leave rice, tea, and paper effigies not to feed spirits, but to feed the human need to say, “You are still with me.”

There’s a Tarot resonance here. The Moon card speaks to the unconscious, to intuition swimming beneath fear and tradition. Ghost Month mirrors its silver light—illuminating what’s hidden. And when smoke curls into the August air, it echoes The High Priestess: mystery that doesn’t demand answers, only presence.

As someone who navigates both the open road and the therapist’s chair, I find these old August rituals to be a kind of metaphysical first aid. They don’t replace clinical work, but they soften the edges of grief. They remind us that mourning isn’t a problem to solve; it’s a landscape to walk.

Have you ever participated in Ghost Month rites? What did the smoke, the offerings, or the quiet moments reveal to you?
