When the Brakes Squeal: Are We Finally Hitting the Pause Button?
-
I barely post here anymore—life’s gotten loud. At 46, I’ve watched enough tech cycles to know when a warning turns into an emergency. Between layout work, the endless Portland drizzle, and trying to figure out how to raise my newborn with a spiritual foundation that doesn’t just hand them dogma, I’ve been reading everything I can get my hands on. And lately, that reading has centered on AI.
OpenAI and Anthropic researchers are finally saying “slow down.” It’s not just a warning anymore; it feels like an emergency. As a designer, I see the scaffolding of how we’re building this. When you push a system past its structural limits, something snaps. Psychologists call it cognitive dissonance—when reality clashes with our assumptions, we scramble to reconcile the gap. We’re scrambling now, trying to align our pace with the actual weight of what we’re unleashing.
In the Tarot, this moment mirrors The Tower—sudden upheaval, old structures cracking under pressure. But it’s also The Hanged Man, the deliberate pause, the surrender to a different rhythm. We’re being asked to step back, not out of fear, but out of clarity. Raising a kid in this climate is exhausting. I don’t want to hand them rigid beliefs, but I do want to teach them how to sit with uncertainty, how to question, how to breathe through the noise. AI safety shifting from “warning” to “emergency” feels like that exact lesson. We’re hitting the brakes not because we’re broken, but because we finally see the cliff.
What’s your take? Are we pausing out of wisdom, or just delayed panic?
