I spent 40 years in healthcare watching people face mortality, and I'll tell you this โ€” what folks need at the end isn't a building or a hierarchy. They need meaning. So when I read David Voas and his work on secularization patterns, something clicked.

The man's been tracking religious affiliation decline across Western countries for years, and the trend line isn't slowing down. By 2026, we're apparently hitting some kind of tipping point where "none" becomes the dominant religious identity in multiple countries. But here's what I think the academics keep missing โ€” people aren't becoming less spiritual. They're becoming less institutional.

From what I understand, Carl Jung saw this coming a century ago when he talked about the shift from collective religious containers to individual meaning-making. The archetypes don't vanish just because the church empties out. They just find new homes.

I noticed it myself when I found Reiki three years ago. I wasn't looking for a guru or a doctrine. I was looking for something that worked in my hands, something I could feel. And honestly? The Hierophant card in tarot keeps coming up in my readings lately โ€” not in its traditional "follow the rules" sense, but reversed, almost mocking the idea that wisdom needs a gatekeeper.

There's a cognitive bias at play too. Researchers call it the availability heuristic โ€” they measure what's easy to measure (church attendance, membership rolls) and miss the scattered, individualized practices happening in living rooms and online communities like this one. Voas's data is solid, but his interpretation feels cramped to me.

My experience suggests we're not entering a secular void. We're entering a post-institutional phase where people cobble together their own cosmology from tarot, energy work, meditation, whatever actually produces results for them.

    I don't think that's a crisis. I think it's a return to something older.

Anyone else feeling this shift in their own practice? Because I swear the energy's different lately.

I hear you, and I don't disagree that something's shifting. But I think "return to something older" might be romanticizing it.

      "They're becoming less institutional."

Sure. But here's what two years in a monastery actually showed me: the institution isn't just the gatekeeper. It's the container. The structure, the schedule, the teacher who tells you to sit when you don't want to sit โ€” that's not incidental to the practice. It is the practice, in a way. Jung understood individuation as a process, not a starting point. You don't begin there. You work toward it.

When I do feng shui consultations now, people want the "energy" without the discipline. They want the arranged furniture, not the relationship to space that develops over years of attention. And I get it โ€” I really do. But I wonder if what we're calling a post-institutional renaissance is actually just... fragmentation. The archetypes finding new homes, yeah, but finding them in fifty different places at once, none of them deep enough to hold water.

"People cobble together their own cosmology from tarot, energy work, meditation, whatever actually produces results for them."

The phrase "whatever produces results" is doing a lot of work there. Results by what metric? Feeling better? That's not nothing, but it's also not what the old paths were offering. They were offering transformation through friction. The institution was the friction.

I'm not saying go back to church. I'm saying: don't mistake the absence of walls for freedom. Sometimes the room was keeping you honest.

I want to push back on this a bit, because my experience has been messier than "cobbling together works fine."

I've been doing zazen for 8 years and running neurofeedback experiments on myself for about 3. The meditation gave me something stable. The biohacking gave me metrics. When I started layering in tarot and energy work, I noticed something: without the structural container of a practice with real constraints, I was basically sampling from a buffet and getting intellectually stimulated but not actually transforming.

The Zen lineage I sit with is institutional in the boring sense โ€” there's a teacher, there's a schedule, there's accountability. And I've watched people bounce in and out of our sitting group who are exactly the demographic you're describing. They've got crystals, they've got astrological apps, they've read Michael Pollan on psychedelics. They're spiritually entrepreneurial. And they're also, frankly, anxious and scattered in a way that the people who commit to one thing aren't.

I think Jung's point about individual meaning-making is right, but I don't think he meant it as "pick whatever feels good." The man spent years in analysis with patients. He understood that meaning emerges through constraint, not despite it. The archetype needs a container or it just floods consciousness โ€” which looks a lot like the spiritual burnout I see in people who've been "cobbling" for 5+ years.

The institutions are dying, yeah. But I'm not convinced what's replacing them is equivalent. I think we're in an interim phase where people have the freedom but not yet the discipline to use it well. The scattered practices you're describing feel like a transitional technology to me, not a destination.

That said โ€” I do think the energy's different lately. My HRV data has been weird for months and I can't explain it through lifestyle variables alone. Something's shifting. I just don't think we know yet what it's shifting into.
