Let’s cut the hype. I’m a 29-year-old chef and stay-at-home parent. The daily grind of prepping food and managing a household nearly broke me, so I turned to breathwork to manage the stress. Now I teach a small weekly group at the local community center. When I see the sudden push for VR meditation, my first instinct is skepticism. Is it actually a tool, or just expensive digital escapism?

Psychologically, meditation relies on attentional control—you’re training your brain to stay present without external crutches. VR meditation hands you a fully rendered environment. That’s cognitive offloading. It’s like using training wheels. In the Tarot, The Hermit symbolizes unaided introspection and the hard work of turning inward. VR feels more like The Moon: beautiful illusions that can distract from the actual practice of stillness.

Don’t get me wrong. If you’re drowning in burnout, VR can be a valid entry point. It lowers the barrier to sitting down. But once you start, you have to graduate to unaided breathwork. My group doesn’t use headsets. We use a timer, a cushion, and the raw work of counting breaths. That’s where the real neuroplasticity happens—rewiring your stress response without digital scaffolding.

So, is VR meditation an actual tool? Yes, but only as a bridge. Don’t confuse the headset with the practice. The technology doesn’t meditate for you. You do. If you’re looking for quick stress relief, fine. But if you want lasting change, take the headset off and do the work. The Hermit doesn’t need a screen to find clarity. Neither do you.

What’s your take? Are you using VR as a training wheel, or do you think it’s replacing the actual practice?
