I used to live in graphite and precision lines. As a 19-year-old draftsman, my world was ruled by right angles and measured spaces. Then came stay-at-home parenthood in Minneapolis—sleepless nights, tiny hands pulling at my sleeves, and a nervous system permanently braced for impact. I found relief in breathwork, and now I guide a small weekly group at our local community center. We practice qigong exercises for beginners: slow, circular movements that dissolve tension like steam rising from a warm mug.

Psychologically, this mirrors what Dr. Stephen Porges called polyvagal theory. When we consciously slow the breath and move with gentle intention, we signal the vagus nerve to shift from sympathetic arousal to parasympathetic rest. It’s not mysticism; it’s neurobiology meeting stillness. The body learns to unclench.

In the tarot, I keep returning to The Hanged Man. He doesn’t struggle. He surrenders, hanging upside down to see the world inverted. Qigong teaches that same surrender. Beginners often try to control the flow, but the practice asks you to let go, to become like water finding its level. Paired with The Star’s imagery of healing rain and quiet hope, the sequence reminds us that inner alchemy isn’t about force—it’s about resonance.

Every session, I watch my students exhale the weight of parenting, work, and winter grayness. We stand in a circle, palms open, breathing into the ribs. If you’re starting out, begin with three minutes of diaphragmatic breathing. Let your shoulders drop. Notice how the room changes when you stop holding your breath.

How has slowing down shifted your inner landscape? I’d love to hear what resonates with you.
