Long-time lurker here. I’m a 55-year-old nurse based in Lisbon, currently training as a therapist. I’ve read every thread in this category, but today I feel compelled to share my perspective on breathwork—not as a mystical shortcut, but as a somatic anchor for what people often call "spiritual awakening."

In clinical practice, I lean heavily on Polyvagal Theory. Controlled, rhythmic breathing isn't just relaxation; it's a physiological lever. When we slow the respiratory rate, we stimulate the vagus nerve, shifting the autonomic nervous system out of sympathetic overdrive and into a parasympathetic state. That shift is the literal "box" we step out of. It creates the neurobiological conditions where introspection and what many label "awakening" can actually occur. You don't need a vision; you need a calm nervous system to process your own mind.

Tarot offers a useful metaphor here. The process mirrors The Hermit—turning inward, holding a lantern of awareness in the dark. But as you breathe deeper, you brush against The Moon. That card represents the subconscious, intuition, and the sometimes unsettling terrain beneath conscious thought. Breathwork doesn't bypass the Moon; it gives you the steadiness to navigate it without drowning in it.

I’m increasingly cautious about the current psychedelic hype. Substances can force the door open, but they don't teach you how to walk through it. Breathwork is accessible, repeatable, and doesn't rely on chemical alteration. It’s a disciplined practice that complements evidence-based therapy by giving patients a tangible tool to regulate their internal weather. In my sessions, I’ve found that when clients master their breath, they stop fighting their emotions and start observing them. That shift—from resistance to witness—is the core of what people mean by awakening.

I’d love to hear how others in this community integrate breathwork into their spiritual or therapeutic practice. Does it feel like a bridge for you, or just another trend?
