I’ll admit it: I fell for the AIOracle hype. Living in Brooklyn, it’s hard not to get swept up in the tech rush. But after a few months of rapid-fire, prompt-based readings, I hit a wall. It felt like ordering spiritual takeout—convenient, but completely lacking in soul. That’s when I pivoted to the ‘slow tarot’ movement.

Coming from a comparative religion background, I’ve always been skeptical of how contemplative practices get commodified. The same thing is happening with divination. AI gives you answers on demand, but it bypasses the cognitive friction that actually builds insight. Psychologically, slow tarot aligns closer to what Carl Jung called “active imagination.” Instead of passively consuming an algorithmic output, you’re engaging in a dialogic process. You shuffle, you sit with the cards, you let the symbolism resonate. It’s less about getting a quick fix and more about entering a flow state where the unconscious gets a chance to speak.

Tarot symbolism backs this up. Take The Hermit: it’s the archetype of deliberate withdrawal and inner light. Or The Chariot, which isn’t just about winning—it’s about harnessing opposing forces through patience. When I build spreads with my local Brooklyn study group, we don’t just pull three cards and run. We discuss. We let the imagery sit. We treat the deck like a mirror, not a search engine. I’ve even started pairing the ritual with a simple clear quartz point to ground the session—because sometimes you just need that little spark of CrystalEnergy to keep the focus sharp.

Sure, AI is great for brainstorming, but it can’t replicate the weight of holding physical cards, the ritual of shuffling, or the community dialogue that turns a simple pull into genuine reflection. The algorithm doesn’t know what it means to wait. Slow tarot does.

Has anyone else made the switch? I’d love to hear how you’re balancing tech tools with contemplative practice. And yes, I still read papers on cognitive load theory when I’m not shuffling—old habits die hard.
