The Orb Theory: Physics, Tarot, and the Space Between
-
I’ve spent thirty years on a therapy couch in Eugene, listening to people untangle their lives. At first, I was a strict atheist after leaving a rigid religious upbringing. Now, I’m circling back to something I can’t quite name—a quiet hum in the periphery of consciousness. I call it the "Orb Theory."
In physics, an orb isn’t just a glowing sphere; it’s a boundary where energy concentrates and becomes visible. Think of the observer effect in quantum mechanics—when looking changes what’s there. Tarot mirrors this. The Sun card often depicts a radiant orb, symbolizing clarity and the conscious mind, while The Moon card shows a silver sphere hovering over water, representing the subconscious and dreams.
Jung’s synchronicity bridges this gap. Meaningful coincidences aren’t random; they’re orbs of significance floating between the inner and outer worlds. As a therapist, I’ve seen clients experience these moments—when a dream, a card, and a life event align like three points on a single plane. It’s not magic. It’s physics wearing a poetic coat.
I keep a dream journal on my desk next to a brass orb paperweight. Sometimes I just stare at it while the Oregon rain taps the window. The orb holds stillness and motion at once. It reminds me that the self isn’t fixed. It’s a process, a sphere constantly being drawn and redrawn by memory, intuition, and the quiet pull of the unseen.
I’m not claiming any grand spiritual label. I’m just tracing the edges of what’s visible and what remains just out of sight. If you’ve ever felt that hum, that silver glint in the dark, you know the orb isn’t an object. It’s a doorway.
