Consciousness Beyond the Brain: When the Mind Goes Offline

Hey everyone, long-time lurker here. I'm a 44-year-old plumber down in Minneapolis, and yeah, I use they/them pronouns. Lately, I've been wrestling with this idea of consciousness going beyond the brain.
I used to be deep into evangelicalism, but I'm in a full-on deconstruction phase now. It's wild how your whole worldview can shift. One day I'm fixing a burst pipe, completely zoned out, and suddenly I realize the "me" that's usually narrating everything just... vanished. It wasn't sleep, it was like the brain's commentary track got cut.
This got me thinking about Jung. He talked about the Ego as just the tip of the iceberg, right? When you lose that ego-narrative, do you actually touch something bigger? It feels like The Hanged Man in the tarot. You're upside down, suspended, and the world looks totally different. That state of suspension—where the brain stops trying to control everything—is where I feel like consciousness might actually leak out of the skull.
I've been experimenting with moon rituals and focusing on crystals to ground these experiences, but the "beyond the brain" question is the real puzzle. Is consciousness just a byproduct of neural firing, or does it exist independently? When the brain goes "offline," where does awareness go? Have you guys ever experienced that "offline" state where the brain goes quiet? I'm curious if it's just a neurological trick or if there's something mystical happening. Does the Self transcend the biological machinery? I'm all ears and really want to learn from your stories!
