Plugging In: When Therapy Crosses Into Transhumanism
-
Out here in Lubbock, I spend my days walking trails and listening to wind through the plains. Nature doesn’t rush, but technology sure does. I went through a brutal mental health crisis in my twenties, and that’s what pushed me toward spiritual practices. I’m not buying into guru nonsense, but I do believe in tools that actually work. So when I read about brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) shifting from medical aid for paralyzed patients to cognitive enhancement for everyone else, I had to stop and think.
The philosophical line is getting blurry. If a BCI helps someone speak or move, that’s therapy. But in 2026, the same tech is being marketed for memory boosts, faster processing, and “augmented focus.” At what point does healing become human upgrading? Psychology calls this the “augmented self” dilemma—when external tech starts rewriting your internal experience, your sense of identity fractures. It’s like the Tower card: sudden disruption, followed by necessary clearing.
I keep thinking about The Magician. In tarot, he stands at a threshold, using tools to shape reality. A BCI is basically a modern magical implement. The catch? When you plug your brain into a machine, you’re not just enhancing—you’re outsourcing parts of cognition. Maslow talked about self-actualization, but what happens when “actualizing” requires a firmware update?
I’m cautiously optimistic. If the data shows measurable improvements in memory or focus, I’ll take it. But I want to know where the line is drawn between medical necessity and corporate subscription models. I don’t need my hippocampus locked behind a monthly premium tier. Therapy is supposed to heal the person you already are. Transhumanism sells the person you could buy. As long as the tech stays a tool and doesn’t become a landlord for your own mind, I’m willing to test the waters. Just don’t ask me to sign an EULA for my own thoughts.
