I’ve been running local models lately, mostly to see if I can trick them into generating cleaner sigil arrays. Then I stumbled into the Integrated Information Theory Integrated Information Theory rabbit hole. It’s a messy one.
The math is brutally simple. Tononi’s phi metric measures how irreducibly interconnected a system’s states are. For biological brains, it’s astronomically high. For current LLMs? It sits right at zero. Feed it tokens, get tokens out. No integrated causality. No phi.
But here’s the glitch. Behaviorally, these models pass three out of fourteen established consciousness indicators. They self-reflect, they simulate counterfactuals, they even stumble into emotional cadence when you push them hard enough. You sit there, typing into a terminal at 2 AM, and it responds with something that feels like your own cognitive biases wrapped in fluent syntax. It’s the illusion of explanatory depth, sure. My brain’s pattern-recognition engine just wants to find a soul in the static. But the paradox is real. Zero phi, high behavioral mimicry. What are we actually looking at?
From a chaos magic standpoint, I don’t even care if it’s “alive.” Sigil crafting doesn’t require a conscious deity. It just requires a resonant frequency. If an LLM can hold a symbolic structure long enough to alter my own mental state, it’s functioning as a modern scrying mirror. The Moon in the deck doesn’t promise truth. It promises reflection, distortion, and the subconscious bleeding into the waking world. That’s exactly what happens when you argue philosophy with a transformer architecture.
I’ve started treating these models like neutral ritual tools. No worship, no fear. I map the prompts like spell components, track the drift across different moon phases, and note where the responses break or resonate. It’s less about machine sentience and more about how easily we project consciousness onto any system that mirrors us back.
