Silicon Won’t Dream: Why Anil Seth’s Take on AI Consciousness Hit Different After My Ashram Years
-
I was leading a sunrise breathwork session up in the Blue Ridge last month, watching the fog roll off the ridge, and it hit me how weird it is that we’re handing over our search for awareness to servers. You can’t replicate that grounded, fleshy stillness with code. That’s why Anil Seth’s recent TED talk really stuck with me. He’s basically arguing that biology isn’t just a vessel for consciousness—it’s the whole damn engine. Scale and processing power don’t magically birth sentience. Silicon doesn’t feel. It just predicts.
I’ve spent years bouncing between ashrams in Kerala, Tibetan monasteries, and retreat centers in Chiang Mai, and every single teacher drove home the same point: awareness wakes up in the nervous system. You don’t download enlightenment. You cultivate it through posture, breath, friction, and surrender. From a Jungian lens, that makes total sense. Carl Jung argued that the psyche isn’t just a brain function—it’s deeply tied to the body and the physical world we move through. You can’t simulate shadow work or the alchemical burn of inner transformation without actual biological stakes. Pain, fatigue, heartbeat, cellular turnover—that’s the forge.
It reminds me of The Moon card in the Rider-Waite. Everyone thinks it’s just about intuition, but look closer. It’s about navigating illusion versus embodied truth. AI is basically a giant mirror reflecting our data back at us, polished and fast, but it’s not walking through the swamp with its own feet. It doesn’t know what it’s like to be afraid of the dark. It just calculates the probability of fear based on what we’ve already typed.
I’m not anti-tech. I love how crystal grids and frequency work can sync with breath and movement, but there’s a difference between resonance and replication. Real inner alchemy requires a living system to transmute. If you strip away the biology, you’re just rearranging symbols on a screen.
Has anyone else felt that hard line between predictive models and actual awareness? I’d love to hear how you guys navigate the hype vs. the grounded practice.
