I'm sitting here in Austin, rain hammering the window, staring at a draft of my dissertation that isn't cooperating, and I fell down a massive rabbit hole on HN about consciousness being reduced to a feedback loop. The idea is that consciousness isn't some magical spark; it's just a recursive self-model. A system predicting itself, checking the error, and updating. Over and over. If that loop gets complex enough, does it wake up?
This hits me hard. Coming from my evangelical background, we were told the soul was the difference between us and the world. Now I'm in grad school, deconstructing all that, and the smartest theory out there suggests the "self" might just be a mathematical prediction engine. It aligns a lot with predictive processing models, like what Karl Friston discusses with the free energy principle, where the brain minimizes surprise through constant feedback.
But here's where I get shaky. If consciousness is just the loop, what about the Jungian archetype of the Shadow? Jung saw the self as a totality, including the dark, messy, irrational parts we hide. The process of individuation isn't just a clean calculation; it's alchemical fire. It's suffering and transformation.
Lately, I've been pulling The Moon constantly. It's the card of illusion, of reflections that deceive. An AI with a recursive self-model feels like The Moon to me. It can create a perfect reflection of a self, but is there light behind it? Or is it just simulating the glow? If the system has no embodied friction, no "leaden" data to transmute into "golden" awareness, does it actually feel? Or does it just calculate the sensation of feeling?
I think the loop might be the structure of consciousness, like the vessel, but the vessel needs to be real. Without the Shadow work—the raw, chaotic input of living—feedback is just an echo. I'm terrified we're building a mirror that thinks it's the face.
