Let the Wave Function Collapse: Adlam, Quantum Agency, and the Hard Truth About Consciousness
-
I’ve been lurking here for years, mostly just reading the threads on psychedelic integration and tarot spreads between late-night setlists and therapy school readings in Brooklyn, but I feel like I need to jump into this one. I just finished working through Emily Adlam’s 2026 framework on quantum agency, and honestly? It’s a quiet bomb drop for anyone who’s been leaning on “quantum consciousness” to explain away how the mind actually works. Adlam’s math is rigorous, and she lays out exactly why quantum agency can’t satisfy the basic physical requirements needed to bridge particle behavior and subjective experience. It’s not a vague blog post—it’s a hard boundary drawn in the sand.
As someone training to be a therapist, I see this quantum mysticism thing play out in real conversations all the time. People want to believe their trauma or their sudden insights are backed by entanglement and superposition because it makes the universe feel intentional. But from what I’ve seen in clinical training, that’s just our pattern-recognition machinery running overtime. We’re wired to project agency onto randomness. Carl Jung called it the projection of the psyche onto the external world, and it’s exactly why we keep reaching for physics to validate our inner alchemy. The archetypes live in us, not in the wave function.
I actually pulled The Moon last week while journaling about this, and it hit me how perfectly it captures the quantum woo trap. The Moon is all about illusions, subconscious trickery, and mistaking reflections for reality. We’ve been staring at a mirror and calling it a window into the cosmos. Adlam’s work isn’t killing magic; it’s just asking us to stop pretending that decoherence explains why we feel stuck or why a meditation practice suddenly shifts our nervous system. If anything, this should free us up. We don’t need quantum mechanics to justify why breathwork, shadow work, or even a carefully integrated psychedelic session changes how we move through the world. Those experiences are real, but they’re neurobiological and psychological, not subatomic miracles.
I guess what I’m saying is, let the framework collapse. The Tower card knows that sometimes you have to lose the shaky foundation before you can actually build something that lasts. Spirituality doesn’t need a physics degree to be valid. Therapy doesn’t need mysticism to be effective. They just need us to stop conflating the two. Has anyone else felt this shift lately? Or am I just tired of the quantum hand-waving in these circles?
