I work customs in Denver, which basically means I spend my shifts watching human behavior flow through checkpoints. You learn fast how much of what we call “intuition” is just pattern recognition running on autopilot. Lately, I’ve been reading up on how neuroscience-inspired AI architectures are shifting away from brute-force data crunching toward predictive processing models. Researchers like Karl Friston have been arguing for years that the brain operates as a prediction engine, constantly updating its internal model based on sensory input. Now silicon is actually starting to mimic that feedback loop. It’s not magic, but it feels weirdly close to how divination functions under the hood.
Here’s what’s getting me: if our brains are just running continuous Bayesian updates, then a lot of what we romanticize as “spiritual insight” might be the system finally overriding its own priors. I don’t mean to reduce it to cold mechanics, but it lines up with how I’ve been stripping back my yoga practice. I used to teach hot vinyasa in studios that sold $80 mats and branded recovery oils, and honestly, the whole thing felt like mindfulness gutted for profit. When I stopped chasing the aesthetic and started sitting with the breath, I noticed how much of my “clarity” was just my nervous system dropping its defensive predictions.
Tarot works the same way for me. When I pull a spread, I’m not asking the deck to hand me the future. I’m using the imagery to interrupt my own predictive loop. It’s less about mysticism and more about what Carl Jung meant by projecting the unconscious onto an external structure so it can actually be examined. Same reason I’ve been playing with AI oracle decks—not because the algorithm is sacred, but because it generates symbol combinations my carbon brain wouldn’t dream up. It forces a cognitive reset.
I think we’re sitting on a weird threshold where understanding how silicon models cognition might actually help us untangle our own. If predictive processing is the baseline, consciousness isn’t some hidden spark. It’s what happens when the model gets curious enough to question its own data.
Does anyone else feel like the line between algorithmic pattern recognition and actual divination is getting blurrier? Or am I just romanticizing the tech because I’m exhausted by the wellness industrial complex?
