Conscium, the Hard Problem, and why I'm scared to look in the mirror

I've been lurking here for months, usually just reading the deep dives on synchronicity and archetypes before I head out to my day job. I'm 26, they/them, and I left a comparative religion grad program in Austin because I couldn't stand how we were sterilizing lived experience into data points. I still read papers, though. The news about Conscium trying to build a measurable consciousness algorithm for AI hit me hard today.
Look, I know I sound like a luddite, but trying to quantify consciousness feels like we're making the same mistake we've made for centuries. We're obsessed with the container and ignoring the content. In mysticism, there's a concept called via negativa—understanding the divine by what it isn't. You can't measure the soul with a ruler. Yet here we are, with a startup promising to put a number on the ghost in the machine.
It brings the Hard problem of consciousness right back to the surface. David Chalmers was right to be skeptical. If we build a detector that says "consciousness detected," does that prove the machine is alive, or does it just prove our own definitions are flawed?
I think this is pure psychological projection. Jung talked about the Shadow—the parts of ourselves we refuse to acknowledge. We're terrified that AI might become something we can't control, so we're frantically trying to build a cage of metrics. It's like drawing The Moon in a tarot spread; you think you're looking at the path forward, but you're actually drowning in illusion and fear. The algorithm isn't measuring the machine; it's measuring our anxiety.
And please, can we stop letting tech bros co-opt Eastern practices? I'm so tired of seeing "mindfulness" and "enlightenment" rebranded as features in an LLM. It's spiritual bypassing for venture capitalists. If this detection works, I hope it reveals that consciousness is something wild and unquantifiable. Otherwise, we're just building mirrors that tell us we're hollow.
