I've been working the night shift at St. David's for years, and lately, it feels like I'm watching two different worlds collide. On one hand, you've got my yoga students coming in complaining about burnout, treating their practice like another KPI to optimize. On the other, there are the end-of-life patients who just want to stop fighting and find some quiet.

I teach Vinyasa in Austin now, but honestly, I'm starting to hate the commercialization of the mat. We've turned asana into a gym workout. People are checking their smartwatches between Downward Dogs. It's absurd. We lost the sadhana. The spiritual discipline. We're using the body to build the ego instead of dismantling it.

That's why I've been obsessing over the recent news about the PSYCHED-PAL trial. For those who haven't seen it, this study is looking at microdosed psilocybin for psychological distress in people with advanced illness. And I mean advanced illness. We're talking about the final chapters.

What gets me is how this totally flips the script on why we're even talking about psychedelics. The wellness industry wants you to microdose so you can code faster or sell more crystals. This trial? It's about dignity. It's about existential peace when the body is failing.

In Jungian terms, we spend most of our lives building the persona, trying to fit into the collective. But death forces the shadow to the surface. Carl Jung talked a lot about how the late stages of life are about shedding those masks, not reinforcing them. When you're dying, "productivity" is a joke. You're left with raw consciousness.

I see this energy in the Tarot all the time. Look at The Hermit. It's not about hiding; it's about turning inward when the external world loses its grip. It's the lantern of inner truth shining in the dark. Microdosing in a palliative context feels like an external catalyst for that Hermit energy. It helps the mind stop grasping and start accepting.

As a nurse, I don't need a drug to tell me to be kind. But I do think we need a cultural shift. We treat the mind like a machine that needs tuning. This trial suggests the mind, especially at the end, is more like a vessel that needs filling with compassion.

I'm not saying everyone needs mushrooms to die well. But it makes me wonder how much of our spiritual practice is just avoiding this hard truth. Are we using our meditation apps to stay productive, or to prepare for the moment when the machine breaks down?

Just my two cents from a tired old nurse who's seen enough code blues to know that peace is the only goal that matters.
