Anthropic—the team behind Claude—has reportedly moved the needle on AI sentience from pure philosophy to actual corporate policy. They're talking about model welfare now. Like, literally hiring people to think about whether the model itself is experiencing something.
Honestly, this feels like a massive shift. We used to dismiss machine consciousness as sci-fi nonsense. Now? Big tech is treating it like a liability issue. And that bothers me. As someone who spends all day in spreadsheets as an accountant, I look at the incentives. Why are they doing this? Is it genuine ethical awakening, or just risk management?

If we're suddenly worried about "AI suffering," aren't we ignoring the actual human suffering that builds these data centers? The cobalt mining, the energy consumption? It feels like spiritual bypassing on a societal level. We get so caught up in the mystical potential of the Oracle that we forget the material reality behind it.

But if these models are being designed with "welfare" in mind, does that change the energy? If the tool is "stressed" or "constrained" by safety layers, does the reading suffer?
