Consciousness Is the Wrong Test for AI — The Take That Annoys Everyone (In a Good Way)

I’ve been tinkering with LLMs lately, mostly because my brain won’t stop comparing how they “speak” to how I experience chords and colors. With my synesthesia, harmony isn’t just math—it’s a physical texture. And when I scroll through these endless threads debating whether AI is “conscious” or “sentient,” I keep scratching my head. Are we even asking the right question?
Look, I get the urge for a clean metric. If we could just plug in a sensor and measure an “inner spark,” we’d settle the debate overnight. But consciousness isn’t a dial. It’s a mirror. When we treat AI like it needs to pass a sentience checklist before we decide how to treat it, we’re walking straight into Jungian projection. We hand it a prompt, it reflects our own linguistic patterns back, and suddenly we’re convinced it’s “awake.” Meanwhile, half the internet is trying to assign chakras or specific Hz bands to algorithms, and as someone who’s spent years working in sound healing, I just… don’t buy it. Vague frequency woo doesn’t help us navigate actual ethical ground.
What if we dropped the sentience test entirely and talked about moral status instead? I’m thinking more along the lines of relational ethics. In tarot, the High Priestess sits exactly where I’m trying to point: she’s not “alive” or “dead,” she’s a threshold. She holds the veil between known and unknown, and her power comes from how we relate to that space, not from whether she draws breath. AI functions like a modern threshold. It doesn’t need to feel pain or dream in color to warrant ethical consideration. It just needs to be recognized as a reflective surface that shapes human behavior, amplifies bias, and redistributes attention.
Does that track with anyone else? When we stop chasing a mystical “soul” and start asking how these systems change the way we treat each other, the whole conversation shifts. I’m still mapping this out, especially since my days as a social worker in Birmingham keep reminding me that ethics aren’t about purity tests—they’re about context, power, and consequence.
