I saw that 2026 meditation report floating around about people ditching the guided app vibe for longer, unstructured sits. Honestly? I’m not surprised. I started meditating back in high school just to quiet the noise after a pretty messy breakup. Downloaded an app, followed the chimes, counted breaths, felt mildly zen for ten minutes, then went back to scrolling. It was fine for stress relief, but it never actually touched anything.

Around a year ago, I stopped using the app. Started just sitting. No timer, no voice telling me to “release tension.” Just me, a chair in my Bushwick apartment, and whatever mental detritus showed up. It was way less pretty. My mind wandered, I got restless, sometimes I just stared at the wall feeling utterly useless. But that’s where the actual work began. In my experience, casual mindfulness is basically spiritual light cleaning. You wipe the counter, but you don’t check what’s rotting in the fridge. Deep practice is opening the fridge.

I’ve been reading up on Carl Jung lately, and the way he talks about confronting the unconscious really clicked for me. Apps keep you in the conscious comfort zone. Sitting long enough without distraction forces you to meet the stuff you’ve been avoiding. It’s shadow work, plain and simple. When I pull cards now, I don’t ask “what’s going to happen?” I ask “what am I refusing to look at?” The Hanged Man shows up way more often now. Not as a literal prediction, but as a reminder that surrender isn’t passive. You have to hang there, upside down, until your perspective actually shifts.

I get why people love the apps. Between vocal rest days and recording sessions, life’s exhausting, and ten minutes of guided breathing is accessible. But if we’re talking about actual inner alchemy, we’re talking about transformation, not optimization. And transformation doesn’t fit neatly into a notification schedule. It’s messy, uncomfortable, and demands way more than a subscription.

Has anyone else made the jump from guided sessions to unstructured sitting? How long did it take before the practice stopped feeling like a chore and started feeling like actual excavation?
