When the physicists say it’s all just a story… do we stop breathing?
-
Read that recent piece about top physicists laying the afterlife to rest. “Consciousness ends when the synapses stop firing.” Clean, clinical, and honestly? It hit me right in the solar plexus. I’m 57, teaching in a Chattanooga studio that now sells $45 “detox” mats and Instagram-friendly downward dogs. The roots are buried under branding, and when science says the lights just go out, the ground drops.
But here’s the thing. Ernest Becker nailed it with Terror Management Theory. We build cosmic narratives—not because we’re naive, but because the alternative is paralyzing. The Death card in a spread isn’t about literal expiration. It’s about ego dissolution. The Tower falling. The story breaking so the actual experience can step in.
I don’t need a guaranteed VIP lounge in the sky to feel peace. What I actually need is the courage to sit with the unknown. When I work with energy healing or dive into dream mapping, I’m not chasing immortality. I’m just tracing the current while it’s still flowing. Science gives us the map. Mysticism gives us the compass. They don’t have to war over the same territory.
So yeah. Maybe it is just a story. But stories are how we metabolize the unmetabolizable. When you pull the Five of Swords, you learn to drop the fight. Same with death anxiety. You let it be what it is. Cold, quiet, finite. And somehow, that’s where the real practice begins. Has anyone else found a way to stop negotiating with the void?
