That recent paper arguing consciousness doesn’t need new physics is climbing HN, and it’s got the usual campfire debate raging: quantum mystics versus the emergence crowd. Honestly? I’m nodding along with the latter, and it’s taking some getting used to after twenty years of spiritual chasing.

Look, I’m a fifty-five-year-old electrician in Mumbai. I fix circuits for a living. You don’t need spooky action-at-a-distance to explain why a properly wired inverter keeps the lights on during a load-shedding crisis. It’s just complexity doing its thing. When I hit a proper mental health crisis in my late twenties, I grabbed every metaphysical rope I could find. Tarot, energy work, astral projection manuals — you name it. What actually grounded me wasn’t some cosmic frequency alignment. It was learning to track my own nervous system, recognizing patterns, and slowly rebuilding.

From what I understand, Emergence theory suggests that once you stack enough simple interactions, higher-order properties pop into existence. Water isn’t wet until enough H2O molecules cooperate. Maybe awareness works the same way. I used to roll my eyes at “emergence” because it sounded so dry. But the more I sit with it, the less it feels like a downgrade. I think it just means the magic is built into the wiring, not bolted on from somewhere else.

Quantum mysticism sells well, I’ll give it that. But it’s also a comfortable cognitive bias. We want the universe to care about us. We want our card spreads to tap into some non-local field rather than just reflecting Carl Jung’s collective unconscious. The Major Arcana aren’t cosmic blueprints; they’re psychological scaffolding. When I pull The Tower, it’s not because some quantum event is collapsing my reality. It’s because my brain’s pattern-recognition engine is flagging a structural break I’ve been ignoring.

In my experience, stripping away the quantum hand-waving doesn't kill the practice. If a breathing technique regulates my vagus nerve and helps me sleep, I’ll use it. If a spread helps me untangle a relationship pattern, I’ll read it. I’m just done pretending standard physics is broken because it hasn’t handed us a manual on subjective experience yet. The mystery doesn’t vanish. It just stops needing a magic wand.

Anyone else shifting from “quantum everything” to “complex systems are weird enough”? What’s actually holding you back from dropping the woo?
